been having loads of warnings on my dashboard about engine because the adblue not getting through but i think its frozen as its about 80 or 90 percent water anybody else experienced the same and should i worry?
no probs on my motor but from what i seem to remember adblue is very similar to something called urea which is used on runways as a di icer.
just looked it up because i was curious.
it can freeze up at -11. which is funny because as i said it can be used as a deicer
aye urea is pig ■■■■ lol

-16 At beatock today No probs with adblue
Posted about this before .According to the bumf we get with ours adblue freezes at -11c but can freeze at -8c if the conditions are right it will turn.Plus its says if it freezes its kaput!.The cristilisation kills the properties in it…We keep ours outside .Spoke to the fitter he said he took the pump off as it had froze.Lets see how it works next week. .We have had problems with the Mercs not purgeing the system when switched off.The build up ruined the system. It looked like a liitle iceburg in there.

Running down through France I had emissions warnings, stop for a break and it’s ok, then again after 2 to 3 hours on the light came again stop for 45 ok so I assumed it was freezing, that was showing -6 suppose with wind chill it would be a bit lower.
well i feel quite good now.
I said this would happen.
What are the dash warning signs about addblue not getting through. This week have had a symbol of a steering wheel with a wavy line under it and yellow warning triangle below that. Is that it. Disappeared after about five minutes. Happened every day.
on my actros first warning was MR visit workshop so went into diagnostics on computer said SCR event
then the yellow light came on shaped like an engine but the other codes gone off except the yellow engine one??
My yellow warning light came on this week.Called into M/B,it is add blue sender unit not working.Nothing to worry about they said, new one being fitted monday.Still using add blue as guage is going down.
Also had the light come on in summer and it was a broken wire to the sender unit. This did stop it from using add blue and it did not go onto reduced power or anything else.
Strange.
When I started my shift last weekend the truck (FH13 480) had been standing for a day, and it was under -20. For the first few km the AdBlue meter read zero (although I knew there was plenty in there) and scrolling through to adblue in the fuel menu the computer said “not available” for the adblue amount. After the first few km the meter came back to life though, and didn’t appear to give any problems, there were no error or fault messages nor did I notice any lack of power at any point.
I have another shift tomorrow (I’ve just had odd shifts since getting laid off back in november) under similar circumstances - it’s -24 at the moment - let’s see what it’s like . The system has to be useable in freezing conditions though otherwise the wagons would be unusable for half the year here. In this part of Finland we’ve had well below -30 on several occasions already. Last year I had a slightly older FH12 that didn’t use Adble.
I’ll phone up one of the other drivers when I’m on the job tomorrow and ask about AdBlue in really cold conditions.
I have been getting this message since the cold snap started on my dash…
AdBlue System Error Visit Workshop…this is accompanied by the yellow engine symbol. Called our local Volvo dealer, they said yeah dont worry bout it.
Have noticed I only used about 3 pints of the “■■■■■■■■ stuff this week
And I aint exactly been locals. Higham Ferrers to Newport Wales then Pembroke, Scarriff Carlow and Dublin then back too Higham Ferrers…the boss is a bit miffed, he said you could have done the same with the diesel consumption
I have never seen pigs fitted with colostamy bags can anyone tell me where they do it…
Seen temp’s of -12 this week and no problem’s.
The only difference I’ve noticed is a marked lowering in consumption. That’s in a 57 plate FH, btw.
I wonder if ad blue is different in winter like diesel?
Maybe there is a grade that freezes at a lower temp?
AFAIK wind chill only affects humans & pigs!
I wonder how they’re going to cope in Canada & the USA, all new trucks in 2010 will have SCR (except for a goofy International bodge up of the CAT engine that uses massive amounts of EGR) it regularly gets below -30c over there, if you are having problems in these temperatures then there’s going to be a lot of motors on the hard shoulder over there
To update my post above:
I had a shift starting last night - truck had been parked up for a day and a half at about -20C.
The AdBlue meter wasn’t functional at first, but came to life after about 15 minutes.
-
Adblue starts to freeze at about -11C, but doesn’t freeze totally until it has been at about -25 for a day. Even then, it doesn’t go solid, rather it is somewhat jelly like, similar to frozen diesel. It isn’t harmed at all by freezing.
-
There is a system for heating the tank. On my FH13 yesterday, I noticed several wires going to the tank, maybe it is fitted with an immersion heater? In any case when I got to the docks, I noticed that the outside of the tank was slightly warm to the touch (the ambient temperature was -16C)
-
A bit of Googling reveals that there is an allowance in the EURO-whateveritis regulations to allow for a warm up period.
-
In short, the manufacturers and legislators have thought about this and it isn’t a problem.
Best regards from the really frozen north
