No one seems to have mentioned Ken Mallinson[Desert RAt] Who I believe had somethingto do with starting up A one.
Does anyone remember him?

Hullo Rocky7,
Yes I should think that everybody remembers Ken. I don’t think he actually started Aone, but I do believe he incorporated his firm into them and it was certainly his large allocation of Permits that got them on their way. I am sure Dennis will know the full facts when he gets on here again. I don’t know if it’s anything to do with the family, but I have noticed a lot of lorries lately when I do my weekends, all signwritten Mallinson, Dark Green. all very tidy looking.
Cheers, Archie

Hi Guy’s, Denis asked me to give him some backup, as for Ken Mallinson, he had nothing to do with starting A OneTransport, Jack M Robinson started A One long before I started back in 1974/5, Ken started DLS Europe Ltd along with Donald Leslie Senior, hense the DLS, they were doing over the water long before most companies all that time ago,he was bought out by Donald Chapman, of Chapman’s Freight Services Fitzwilliam Street Bradford, who eventually were bought out by J M Robinson A One Transport, cant remember the exact date, it was about early 1974, who within the first year almost bought a new fleet of the F88 Volvo 290s for the continental guys, only a couple of drivers went out in F86s but not for long, because we all had the new 290s, we were the king’s of the road at the time, good wage / expenses and a good team of drivers who all got on well together, although there’s always the odd ■■■■■■■, it was one of the best jobs in the country, or should I say “out of the country”, most of the work was textiles, ICI chemicals, and anything that paid top dollar, that’s why we had good job, most of the ICI went out to Hungary on a regular basis, sometimes 6 to 10 loads a week Etc Etc Etc, I could go on, but I’ll let Dennis have a say, or else he might think I’ve taken over his job, so it’s over to you dennis.

any of u ex continental drivers, rember walter or should i say jack tether old walter could tell a merry tale he certainly
could,u only have to ask the lads

Hullo Dennisglover,
Jack Tether eh ? he used to have my Son Nick in fits with his tales, what about Steve Savage and Billy whatshisname,( was into anything American and Country Music ) are they still on the go ?
Cheers, Archie.

Hi again guy’s, Jack Tether the last time I heard was in a wheel chair, Jack wasn’t a bad guy, “he just didn’t like water”.I almost didn’t see anyone after 1995/6 when I went in hospital with cancer, but it’s nice to see everyone getting on again, although be it sometimes getting it wrong, I was going over the pond for almost all the time I was with A One, except for the break when the wife went off with a taxi driver, “but that’s another story”, but it’s good to know we can get together even if it’s on this contraption of a thing, “Computer”, Yes I’m an old git just like many more of us, and we oldies can learn to use them, unfortunately lots of them have gone to the great road in the sky, and all most of us have are the memories of the best transport company at the time, until N Maggee got his filthy hands on it, he was an asset stripper, every company he bought he did the same, and A One Transport was no exception, the last I heard he had vanished to South America, because lots of people were looking for him, I reckon Debbie Maggee his daughter, would look after him along with her husband Paul Daniels, he must have waved his magic wand and sent him him away, your turn now Dennis.

kojak, there is obviously a conspiracy by CIA or similar which has eradicated any proof of a-one ever having existed from the face of the earth :open_mouth: i’ve been trying to find photos and/or info for years without success (kate did promise some photos but i think she’s been silenced  )

i even spoke to their old european division boss a few months ago, but will smith and tommy lee jones obviously got there first with their magic pens - he has NO photos at all, hmmmm…

as a young 'un i knew lots of their drivers, good firm and paid excellent money for the time - didn’t go bump as far as i can make out, just packed up one day

They had a front cover shot and a big article in Truck magazine in the mid 80s - F88 on the cover, I recall, in a moving shot in the rain. There was also an Atkinson Silver Knight restored in their colours (CWW 713H), and which I believe was sold off. Haven’t seen it for a while, but I presume it’s still about somewhere.

the old Atkinson was our shunt-er for a few years,i learnt to drive in this truck, god i was only 15 and 8 stone, would not have liked to drive it fully loaded,it was restored by myself re/wiring and ■■■■ corner the fitter. i had to bring it back from a truck show and i could not get it in top gear, looked a right prat 35mph,it ended up at auction at knaresborough auctions and jack Robinson got it for 1900 quid

I wasn’t sure whether that comment was tongue in cheek, but outr of idle curiosity I found this on wikipedia:

McGee was born Debra Ann McGee in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, England, to an English mother, Lillian Howes, and an Irish father, Patrick McGee.[1] Her sister works for a bank and her brother is an accountant. When McGee was young her parents ran a corner shop. Later, her father worked for a large gold manufacturing firm making rings and other jewellery.[2]

Hello Dennis, as you know last Sunday out of the blue I received a P.M. from Keith 2 who asked me if I could remember anything else about A1. I repied to Keith welcoming him to the Trucknet site and I mentioned a little story about when I was weekending at the Swiss / West German border with an A1 driver called Norman whose surname I have forgotton. I think that I also mentioned another A1 driver who was a very good friend of mine called Billy Murrey and asked if he knew him. Keith asked me if I could forward this message to you and as I thought that he might not be too good with computers I happily did so.If you remember I also welcomed you to the site and sent you the story about Norman from Brighouse hoping that you might remember his surname.
As regards to my comments about A1 being the best paid drivers in The North, this was as a response to JJ72 who had made an earlier post and I was agreeing with him. Why I thought this was because as I had said in an earlier post that in 1980/81 on a ferry from Dover to Zeebrugge, Cuddles who was then the A1 shop steward told Chris Turnbull who was an owner driver ( although he didn’t pull for A1 ) and myself that the A1 drivers and management had just agreed on a very good pay rise.
Now I can’t remember how much we were on at the time and I didn’t start running to Italy until four years later but I do remember that A1 were allegedly on more money than most of the other Northern companies going across the water.
It was never my intention to get into a " How much did you get " argument as I was only agreeing that from what I heard A1 were on very good money.
By 1994 I had also stopped doing Continental work and I was also doing a bit of tanker work mainly from I.C.I. Huddersfield up to Wilton and Seal Sands, who knows we might of seen each other sometime on the A1/A19.
Anyway, I am sure that there will be a few people who are glad to see this thread re started

Regards Steve.
