Hope your keeping fit and working, how’s xroads doing, are you still there or have they had enough of you, I have a mate working for a company at Selby, he’s a fitter but they’ve just parked 9 waggons up and may be making him redundant, he’s as sick as donkey, hows jobs at your firm are there any going, he’s not a bad lad and a good worker, one of the old school.

A short story of Old Lang signe, it was a trip with Ken Mallinson just after Christmas and before new year, we did a flyer to make sure we got out of Hungary before new year, we had a bit of a problem with the police at Sopron, trying to get through, they didnt like it at all, but a couple of packet’s of ■■■■ did the trick, the Austrian police told us to park on the lay-by about 200m inside Austria but as soon as they turned there back we were gone, and parked up in a friend of mines truck yard mixed in with his trucks, in Vulkerprodersorf a small village about 4 km inside Austria, being new years night we all along with the rest of vilagers we as usual to the Gasthof to eat drink and get merry, I didnt know Ken could drink so much wine, but he did in fact he drank almost everything they had, and me being a sober person, had to get used to the beer, but not a problem I soon got the hang of it, and ended up getting as ■■■■■■ as Ken, when it was time for the new year sing-song they all did there Austrian thing, singing and dancing and when they’d finnished we said it was our new year an hour later, and in that hour we tought them all to sing Aul lang syne, so at midnight English time we had all the Austrians singing our new year in with the English version, also they gave us the phone to call home to wish all at home happy new year, and guess what, the whole night cost “nothing”, but it took us both 2 days to sober up before we dare move off, good old Ken Mallinson one of the old school.

Thats a good little story Jack, well done . Thats more like the kind of thing that most of the people on this website like to read when you jog some old fellers memory like that. I remember Sopron fairly well because it was the first border that I ever used from Austria into Hungary.
I don’t suppose that you are the bloke they called Tapper Jack are you ? who used to do the North East Trunk or was it the Scotch Changeover ? he must be in his late seventies by now if he still with us, another of life’s great characters he was .
As I mentioned to Dennis in his P.M., I never worked for A1 I am only repeating stories that A1 drivers told me years ago when drivers took the time to talk to each other while we were waiting in a queue somewhere. I am sure that all the A1 drivers have got loads of little anecdotes especially from the early days which hopefully they will share.
To Dennis, you are not the the Dennis who used to have a beard when you were a lad were you and drove an F12 ?.

that red mercedes that is pictured wud do the clock and i no because i got it from the late taffy davis it was doctored
and rite as taffy was a pump man i shall say no more then darky donald got it and if i am not rong it was re doctored wat aa shame lol,was there an a-one driver called taffy davis? I got confused thinking you maybe meant it came secondhand from taffy davies (later MFL) up in the northeast, as it bears a west yorkshire registration
settle one other thing please too denis; i was told a tale a few times of jack robinson putting a brick or sumat through a windscreen in the yard because it was filled with flags and crap again after the driver had been warned. story went that the driver told him that was a bit stupid as the firm would have to pay for a replacement - which mr robinson told him it would not, he would!

Jack Robinson never put a brick or anything through any windscreen, he didn’t let anyone put stickers anywhere, but he sure wouldn’t put a brick through one of his own windscreens, he’d make you take them out there and then, but never would he throw a brick at one.
Your listening to too many fantasy stories.■■ don’t believe everything people tell you if they’ve never worked there.■■? just ask the old git’s like us.■■?

erm, that’s what we’re doing - it’s good to have people contribute to the thread who were there, but there’s really no need to go on the defensive quite so strongly jack. the story was told to me over 20 years ago by somebody who worked at fitzwilliam street on UK at the time, it could have been true but maybe wasn’t - it’s hardly worth getting het up about

This thread does seem to have conflict written throughout it, especially since the latest staff came out of the woodwork. There has been a thread asking for information about A One Transport since I joined these forums. JJ72 and Dreva have kept it running, every lorry driver in the world has been told a story that probably originated somewhere else in a different era or a different country.
there wasn’t room on Zeebrugge dock for the amount of drivers who just missed “That Ferry” The Mont Blanc fire stretched from Aosta to Cluses and was caused by everything from a ■■■ end to a blown tachograph fuse.
It seems that K2, Jack Graham and Denis Glover have a lot of good memories, so a book should be written or at least a diary of their years at this well respected company. Anyone else have any info on UFO?
BIGGEE:
That’s a very good photograph, I took this Atki to a show at Elvington many years ago, when I was doing some speed records on my bikes, it must have been about 1993/4/5. the only problem was, the inside was not done out it was the same as it was when it was working, needless to say it didn’t win any prizes, but it reminded me what mine was like when I was at Chapman’s, the only difference was mine had a ■■■■■■■ under the bonnet, it made me appreciate my F10 with the power steering and everything else.

My apology if I was a bit over the top, but every now and again someone tells me something about A One that is totally wrong, it’s not to upset anyone it’s just to say it how it was, and your right, you could never find anywhere to park in Zebrugge for the reasons you said, but it was a great and fun job at the time, and I’m sure we all appreciated everyone’s company at the time, because in this job you were out on your own, and it was only mates, “not only from A One” but mates from every company who went over the water, because we all helped one another in some way or other, “but I doubt it’s like that now”, because there a different breed of driver today, or at least most of them, it’s as if there all brain washed with rules and regulations, but I suppose it’s the PC world we live in today.
Once again my apology for being too abrupt, Dennis should have told me about the website sooner, and may-be I’d have had a different understanding, “it must be something to with being a war baby”.:-Jack Graham
Not wishing to go off topic, but what happened to Chapmans?
This was sent to me by kings. I am sure he will put a quote about it.
When I drove nights for Swifts I would talk to the two south mimms based drivers almost every night
Drifter and Wigwam seemed in seperable on their journey to Yorkshire and back and Drifer took things so seriously. I was running along the M62 to the A1 to head south one night and Drifter came up behind me, he was off his usualu M1 route and was asking questions about various things,
“So what are the police like down this way Pat ?” he asked.
“They are tall with pointed hats” I replied.
“I didn’t mean that, I meant how tough are they on speeding ?” he said.
“They are ok at about 5 mph over the limit, but if you drive stupid they come down on you like a ton of bricks” I said.
“We certainly do” came a new voice, it was a cop we called ‘Skytrain’ he was always on the CB with a joke, Drifter almost pooped his pants, did he creep to this cop or what ? he was stunned that I could kaugh and joke about speeding with the police.
I think Drifter died some years back RIP breaker.
