Jack maybe your thinking of Joe Craven, he died a good few years ago another good woolman, Les.
He knew his way around the continent too Les
First time I met Joe he came into our yard at City Road, he had just come back from the middle east, he had a Volvo 88 ? 89 ?, when he packed it in he came to work with us, some of the tales he told were hilarious, Les.

OOps! sorry Colin, your right it was Joe Craven pleas accept my apologies, your right it was Joe, and yes he was an old wool man, I remember him going to the middle east, he had a Merc, had a bump and swapped a panel from another old truck in the Mocamp, got himself beaten up with the police and put inside, if I remember he lost everything through that one incident. May-be there is someone out there who can correct me again if I’m wrong, it’s the age thing. Jack.

Has anyone got any information about the guy who had plans to write a book about A one transport?
If told you I’d have to kill you, I’m sworn to secrecy. Jack.
OK “maxhagar” I have had permission from the man himself to let you know about the book, but you are sworn to secrecy not to let the outside world know, first it’s not a book about “A One Transport”, it’s a book about A One Transport at the top of the mont-blanc stuck for 10 days in the French blockade many years ago, there were two of us stuck just 2 trucks away from entering the tunnel to go through to France, that evening the weather was fine, then though the night it snowed, and it snowed and snowed again, so when we jumped out next morning we were up to our necks and stuck there for 10 days.
Cant tell you much more because it’s his baby but we were both together out of fuel out of money and out of food like a load of refugees being looked after by the locals, if you need to know more you need to call Les. :-Jack.
after Edwards bell was taken over by renwicks, we got two new marathons, I got one and Dixie dean got the other, a good flying machine but no bloody bed !!

Hi Keith, cant be me, biggest mountain I went over was shap, could be Jack spinning the thread out, . Les.
Hellow to anyone looking into our A One page.
Just a reminder that today is 30 years ago 22nd August 1985 when the aircraft at Manchester airport caught fire and killed 53 passengers and 2 crew including Mrs Hutchinson our Managing directors wife Russel Hutchinson, he was lucky along with his son who got out because he and his son didn’t smoke and she was sitting at the back of the aircraft when smoking was allowed on aircraft.
Just a thought for you out there who remember the incident, it shook A1 as a company and I know he suffered for a very long time after the event, my thoughts are RIP to all the victims who will never be forgotten and pass my condolences to the families of all the victims on this sad day of 30 years ago today.
Jack Graham.
Hello Jack, that’s the great thing about this website, somebody like yourself mentions something that happened thirty years ago and straight away it triggers memories for lots of other drivers. I can remember now that you have just mentioned it that thirty years ago today I pulled onto Carrisio on a Saturday morning when another Brit driver asked me if I had heard about that plane which had caught fire at Manchester two days before. It was the first that I had heard about it and when I went into the restaurant it was showing pictures of the disaster on the television, I felt quite stunned at what had happened. We went on our holidays to Rhodes a couple of weeks later and the burnt out aircraft was still visible from the end of the runway although the burnt out section had been covered with white tarps.
It was two years later on a Saturday morning in Carrisio when I first heard about the Herald Of Free Enterprise disaster which had happened the night before and I probably will never forget the group of English drivers who were sat there in silence mesmerised by the television.

How right you are “mushroomman”, when the fire was in the news I was in Scotland with my wife but didn’t know how it affected A1 until I came home, because I didn’t know about Russel Hutchinson was on it with his family but what a shock it was to find out, you cant imagine the hurt and sadness it caused to him and his family, it sure was a sad day for him and A1 to know he’d lost his wife along with all the others who had been the victims, and when the HOFE went down I’d just got home from Hungary that day and tapper Jack was on his way down to take the same crossing but Geoff Wilkinson told me he’d gone on another boat so was ok, I remember seeing it when I went out a couple of day’s latter on it’s side, it was one sight no-one wanted to see in there lifetime, god bless them all, because some of those drivers who were victims were our workmates, sad days hopefully never to see again.
Thanks for looking in to the site “mushroomman” it’s the only way some of us can keep in contact. Regards :-Jack Graham.
