I’m also long retired myself Harry, but there are lots of drivers out there who can do more then push lorries down the road, we all have our other side to life, I went driving for the same reason most of us did, because we like being behind the wheel of a lorry, but before that I was a mechanic on bikes, but not the new stuff, but the old British bikes BSA Norton Ariel and Triumph etc, so was involved in racing for many years, but if you don’t like speed then it’s not for you, but if you do then you do it as safe as possible, but not on the roads but on the track where it’s organized and safer, but if your handy with a tool-kit it helps on the road, you can save time and money fixing your own lorry to get you home instead of the rip-off garages in Europe where I spent over 20 years of my working life, and I have seen lots of drivers who have talents other than driving, but would rather drive for a living instead, but I managed to mix it with work, picked the meetings I could do whilst at home, it would be interesting to see of other drivers to see what they did for a hobby or a sport, for example in 1990 I took a world land speed record, and with-in the next 3 years took 5 championships, but eventually the body has had enough and you have to give in, it’s the old age thing that catches up with us all, but it was great whilst it lasted.  :smiling_imp:

Just out of interest, if anyone is interested in seeing our guy’s at speed the next meeting at Elvington in 23rd June Dave Smith and Billy Parkinson my old mates from A1 usually come to see, us then 21st July, but the best one is 15th 16th August for another records meeting when your more likely to see Becci go well over 264 mph unless she breaks it again and other record holders doing the same thing, we do camping and out on the longest runway in the UK it’s just great for all the family, and it’s not just for British riders we have guy’s from the US and Holland and France etc to join in the fun, so if your up for it these are the dates to see some real fast guy’s on British soil instead of reading of what they do at Bonneville in Utah USA. Regards :-Jack Graham.

I was given this truck when i started at A ONE in the late sixties,it had the orange flashing lights on the cab roof then. We used carry wide loads of plate steel from Gartcosh in scotland. Happy Days.

N ice to see there is still some life out there! computer was poorly last week so I couldn’t comment, an interesting article about main dealers, got told years ago that JMR was a major shareholder in Crossroad Commercials, don’t know if that’s true but no doubt someone out there knows the truth.

I took this Wagon to Elvington to a truck show that was being displayed when I was doing records on the runway, it made me appreciate the Volvo’s more, it also made wonder how the hell we drove these with no power stearing.

Now then Jack and every one else, regarding power steering,at Parrotts we had a self taught mechanic who was a total moron, he fitted a new power steering box, trouble was he fitted it upside down! along with doing some wireing which set on fire put in a heater box which leaked and made the cab resemble a Turkish bath, but the best was spray painting the Chaseside loading shovel bright yellow without covering up a brand new car so the car got the jaundice look, it took the idiot three days to sort it. they reckon Parrott only kept him on as he copped any flak from the ministry re. log books etc!!

Do any of you remember A One getting one of the first Leyland Marathons in the early seventies ,i was talking to an old colleague and friend of mine last week and he drove it , he said it was a flying machine .

Well I for sure dont know, it was before my time at A1 ramone, I went to A1 in 1975 when they bought Chapmans Freight Services, which was Ex JG Fielders before him.
But still nice to see some-one using the A1 site ramone, I think I’m as guilty for not looking as much as we did a couple of years ago, it’s rare to see anyone using it lately but I will be looking when I get the chance in between doing almost nothing these days, I seam to spend more time going to the doctors and hospital these days, but that’s what we get when we get old and working for 50 years. :- Jack Graham.

Yes I do remember Colin Craven, he worked for JG Fielder way back in the 1960’s, it’s strange we only remember when the names pop up like from yourself, sadly it’s an age thing, but Colin was like the rest of us bringing wool from Liverpool and Hull etc, one thing I do remember about him is that he was always good company to be in, don’t know too much about his background except his wife had cancer and died long ago, but he was a good guy to be with and work with, cant remember how long ago it was but I heard he’d had a heart attack and passed away. :- Jack.
