A close call

So,I nearly went into the back of a lorry last night. He joined at Toddington and built up the speed to 56 then went into lane 2 and slowed down to 30mph for no apparent reason…But no brake lights.Of course it would have been my fault if Id hit him.I was analysing after,I was concentrating,I thought ,but what I realised is ,in the dark and mist,if the truck ahead slows down, there isnt much visual clue for a short period of time. The red warning light came on though. That was a help,so I have to be more aware of this in future…

You’ve…

Spelled condescending incorrectly.

You’re welcome.

It sounds like an insurance fraudster as they remove the bulbs in the brake lights in the hope someone crashes in to them then they fake a whiplash injury to get paid out thousands.

Not many crash for cash fraudsters driving trucks I imagine Tobes.

If you get rammed by a lorry I doubt the whiplash injury is going to be fake

Are you ok hun?

I misread that as a car with no bulbs and just seen Sploomy did mention the lorry.

It was a lorry, just built up to 56mph.But the reason I drew attention to this, the diiference between night driving and driving in the day.If youre a keeping a good distance behind the truck but then he slows down without brake lights, your brain doesnt get enough information, the truck could drop down to 35 ,40 mph but visually,it hardly looks any different and before you know it,youre on top of him

If you’re in lane 2 running at 56 mph and someone pulls out in front of you from lane 1 at 30 mph, or immediately slows down to 30 mph, how is that your fault.
There are numerous situations in which running into someone from behind isn’t always the fault of the driver behind.

Mercedes for the win!
Tells you the speed of the vehicle in front.

Carryfast. He was already built up to 56 so I cant sau pulled out on me but I dont know how a judge would deal with that situation.I dont know if its even illegal to reduce to 30mph in lane 2

I’ ve never checked to see if the exhaust/engine brake puts the brake light on. Do they? Some of these engine brakes are really quite powerful.

No simple answer really. My 64 plate Merc put the brake lights on with the exhaust brake. My 18 plate MAN never put them on despite having a very powerful exhaust brake (was fun when cars were tailgating me), my current 22 plate MAN doesn’t put them on if I only engage stage one, engaging stage two makes them briefly flash, and finally stage three makes them briefly flash but then flash again on every downshift.

I conduct this highly scientific test with every vehicle I’m issued because I don’t want to look like one of them plums who brakes every thirty seconds or so.

Every day a school day,.I never knew brake lights came on with ex.brake…they never used to :unamused:
So it looks like I’m inadvertently doing just that…coming across as a plum.

The new generation Scania’s brake lights do come on with the exhaust brake, you can see the reflection in the mirror on passing vehicles.

a lot of sudden slow ups are the driver rolling a ■■■

Or he is updating his dating profile, on Facebook, or watching a film, after what happened to Ion Unut and Thomasz Kroker they still never learn.

Sometimes,I just put the adaptive cruise on and stay in lane one, lazy way but eventually you end up behind a tescos or its surprising how many drivers vary between 45 to 50 mph without using cruise control.
We had a driver at Leggetts,he used to do Birmingham to Peterlee without using cruise, that sounds like torture to me,but we’re all different,I guess

Just remember if you are caught behind my Tesco truck or many if my colleagues we’re onky going slow to pad the day out
