Has anybody had any experience of these new trailers or their 14.60 metre counterparts?
Oh the trailers that have done more damage than the IRA
Oh, are they that bad?
The back end swings out due to the rear steer, and I mean it swings out worse than any rigid we have a few and virtually every one has been damaged.
I have recently added them to my list of “things to be avoided in transport”
But does it swing out any worse than the rear steering axle on say an urban artic?
Can only speak about my company we have 31 with more on order. Company loves them. I’ve not had the training don’t really want it, most of the damage has been caused by tail swing. Gates getting wiped out, trailers getting cracked when pulling out a space etc. I’m sure if you had the same trailer everyday you would adjust no problem ,but problem lies when you have 500 standard trailers and 31 of these it can catch you unawares and forget you’re pulling one.
Long as you adjust for that wild tail swing you should be fine.

just about nailed it mate , if you drive one everyday its not so bad just depends where the hero In the traffic office decides to send you, should be used for trunking only but we know that wont happen
used to do multi drop with a 18.5 metre trombone really dnt see what ll the fuss is about just keep your wits about you and have a good idea of where you are off to and happy days
I don’t think it’s the trailer that’s the problem.
All good fun going backwards…
The rear steer axle does not lock, even in reverse!!!
I have seen them cause problems on the bay bananas, they have put really low bumper bars on the back, combined with the rear steer, all good fun.
Pretty stupid idea me thinks, should have just kept the tri axle configuration the same just move it back like a trombone, yes the turning circle would get bigger but not by much… Anyway I haven’t had this displeasure of using one & I’d like to keep it that way!

The fact is the idea of the artic outfit was never meant or going to work with large rear overhangs. The more overhang you’ve got the more tail sweep you’ll get which in the case of artics is the worst of all worlds situation being that they are designed to use the tight turning circle of a tractor unit to minimise the effects of cut in but while magnifying the effects of tail sweep. So the last thing that’s needed in the case of an artic is to reduce cut in at the expense of tail sweep by putting the extra length on the rear overhang of a semi trailer.
There is another way in which they could increase load space by ( much ) more, assuming it’s not an indivisible load, and gross weight capacity, with no,or negligible, effects on either cut in or tail sweep or axle weights, but the government won’t allow it.

Yep, I agree with Pimpdaddy as well, I’ve always had the opinion that these new longer trailers should have just had fixed tri axles and sacrificed a bit of “cut in” and kept the overhang the same size as a 13.6m trl.
I know it wouldn’t have made the turning circle test but in the real world this would have been the best way to go in my opinion.
Now look what labour wants

lol… lets hope Liebor dont get in then.
Its a 10 year government sanctioned trial and some hauliers have invested a hell of a lot of money into the trial. I wonder if labour would compensate them.
These trailers are custom built, can’t exactly get them off the peg from a trailer hire company
Anyways,
Saw an argos one a few months ago, double decker 15.65 Meter long and about 16 foot high, box body.
Looks ok with the new units
There is quite a few permits out there!
I know 3 companies on that list are permitted to use them but dont (yet)
Hey, TC Trans, I see your on the list too!!!

lol… lets hope Liebor dont get in then.
What a surprise a bunch of socialist tossers who want freight shifted from road to rail.Or Cam and Clegg’s lot and possibly even the industry itself who range from raving green Lib/Dems to others who just have no idea anyway in not realising the best engineering solution which is drawbar LHV’s.

Im all for it.
It says in that article ‘In layman terms; a trailer with a single rear-steer axle and two fixed axles is more manoeuvrable than a standard 13.6m long semi-trailer with three fixed axles because there is steering at both ends of the articulated vehicle that allows the truck to be driven in a straighter line.’ Funny that, I’ve seen one today with a smashed back end & the tail lift hanging off…
