I really do not understand what is wrong with wearing your hi viz all the time, why does it bug so many drivers, lifes too short to worry about things like that.
Do you sit through the 7 hours of the classroom DCPC course with your hi-viz on ?
I’ll bet you do…
Don’t worry - you’re not alone. Some of the guys I work with do the same.
I’ll never understand what danger it is that they think wearing the hi-viz is protecting them from, given that we are sat in a room in the middle of the admin offices and nowhere near an electric truck of any kind (which for operational purposes are kept inside the warehouse )
I think it must act a bit like a comfort blanket to some people…
Never mind wearing a hi-viz. What’s about driving around a yard with hazards on? I can only assume that the employees are to dim to spot a forward moving vehicle. How do they cope outside the factory gates?

Two problems there.
One people get so used to wearing them its easier often to just leave them on. Then again if you have to wear a uniform then you already look like a ■■■■.
Cue the “I won’t wear a uniform” crew. Why ■■■■ up good or even George cloves for work when they can provide shot clothes it doesn’t matter about and you don’t have to pay for?
As for the whole Hazards situation driving around yards, drivers rarely know whether to take them on or off, some sites insist hazards on all the time some not, unless you know or are told most people default to on and ■■■■ it.
I totally agree with some points but seriously there are more important things to care about than whether someone looks like a ■■■■ or not.

And there you have it. The complete loss of sense, reason and ability, in one reply.
I no longer wonder why I have to have my hazard lights on whilst driving forward in a yard. .
I’m just stating what I believe are the reasons for the situations your talking about. If certain yards insists on hazard lights on then fine I’ll do it, personally I prefer not to use them and don’t generally.
I wear a company uniform so yes I look like a ■■■■ but wouldn’t wreck and get decent clothes dirty at work. Wasting money on clothes for work to try and be fashionable is pointless IMHO
Again with hi viz some people just get used to wearing them all the time, some people occasionally forget to take it off when they don’t need it. Some may be taking it off and putting it on many times in a shift so it’s easier to leave it on, so they don’t get shouted at by some yard womble. I always take mine off when I get it the truck and it goes on at the next drop.
I do however sometimes wear my hi viz coat as its warm and waterproof when I get out at a MSA or anywhere else I might not need it, but only if I’m cold or it’s raining, I’m not taking two coats just so I can have a non viz coat, I swap trucks and can’t leave stuff in a truck and my bag has enough ■■■■ in it already.
As for Bluetooth earpieces I hate them with a vengeance, never had one that didn’t make my ear hurt, I use a super tooth buddy I’m the truck, if I’m out the truck I use a phone normally like any normal person.
The issues are all perceived but sometimes you may be assuming a lot about a situation that is incorrect in these analysis type posts.
In fact I imagine there are companies that insist all the time your on duty you have to wear your hi viz due to some crazy insurance requirement in case you did get hurt. I bet it happens at some places.
Couple or so years ago I went to an oil company’s yard in Aberdeen who I found out were dead strict about H & S issues and because I was not wearing a hi vis, hard hat and steel safety boots I was not allowed out of my vehicle, I was told I should have put them on before I entered their yard, I had them all but they were all in the back !!
I was there to pick up one 145kg box that went into the back of my Ford Transit Connect van !!! bit OTT I thought !! …
All this health and safety nonsense that companies impose is all about one thing and one thing only…not getting sued when someone does something stupid.
They’re simply covering their own asses.
Wouldnt be such a bad idea wearing them at MSA`s IF we were given some priority at the food counters…as we all know 45 minutes isnt a lot of time to get stuck behind a big queue, or a coach party, when you need to get your food and eat it it before the 45 is finished, at least a high viz would give us some clarity…and i think all food outlets should agree to this request…or at least have a sign stating truckers will be given priority and have a dedicated till.
BTW, i dont wear a high viz unless i have to, and certainly not when driving, same as me steelies.
Just seen a bloke either walking home or walking to work and guess what he had a hi vis on, he was carrying a rucksack why not put it in there I know I would.

Does it really matter?

take your hi vis off when walking through MSA buildings you know!Just stopped for a shower at Cherwell Valley and was frankly cringing with embarrassment at the number of lorry drivers walking around the main building like modern day hi vis warriors. Do drivers simply not care or not realise what they look like?
This post may or may not be intended as light hearted.
Surely driving with a hi viz on is worse.
Driving home in your own car with it still on is even worse

Yes it does there’s no need to walk to work with a dirty hi vis on.

But really, why worry about it. Do you get changed at work? I think anybody wearing work clothes to work and back is stupid. Were do you draw the line?

My break takes as long as it takes. Why on earth would you want to rush your meal just to fit within a certain period of time?

I just can not understand how these guys do not realise that they look a complete ‘A’ grade dil sat there behind the wheel wearing one, but if that FACT does not bother them, why should it bother me.
Now y’see, as far as a lot of folk are concerned, sitting there behind a set of frilly curtains makes you look a right plastic plonker, too. Do you not realise that…?

Exactly.
The claim culture has brought this to everyone. Companies now pay so much money on H+S, money that could be put to better use, like maybe wages (doubtful I know…).
Everyone has a story, but I know a man who had been driving for a good 25 years, who, when getting back from the pub, was climbing the steps of the truck, slipped and skinned his shin. He claimed, and won, because he hadn’t been trained on climbing into a lorry.
I can assure you H+S annoys people in every layer of a company, but it is where we are, and unless we have a year where we just let Natural Selection take it’s course and the dimwits die off, we are stuck with it.
The hivis worn whilst driving is useful, in that it’s a fair warning that the hivis behind the wheel may not drive as one would expect.
I’ve put that as politely as possible.
^^^^^ . Whatever are you alluding to Juddian?
I also find that if wearing your Hi viz in the cab and the sun is out it’s distracting cos all you see in the windscreen are two silver stripes
