Yorkshire Livestock Haulage Companies

Little bit of interest for any current or ex livestock drivers. Back in the seventies the RTITB produced a training manual to tell us how to do it. I think they also proposed a five day course.
Here is a little example.

my grand father worked for jack brownbridge in the late 1960s with the said gentleman graham ranby he had a brother called john who was also a gentleman i 1st met graham ranby in1979 when i started driving for brocklesby and son of whitley bridge when he was foreman driver and market man and one of the last gentlemen over the years i have worked for god bless him

Hi Tyneside.
Thanks for displaying information regarding carriage of livestock.
On the front cover there is one obvious error . The n/s loading gate is seen as dropped onto ground level !!
Someone hasnt made a good representation for the " Carriage Bible " . In fig . 4 , the loading gates appear too long to be repositioned in the closed position. ( 11 bars X 2 ) The closed ` positoin clearly show half number of bars.
Were the drivers instructed to carry a saw with them to cut the gates in half , then rejoin them later ■■

Typical stupid and useless government guideline drawings by so-called " Trainers " !!

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Totaly agree with you C W M a load of idiots who think they can do the job better from a swivel chair, they need to get off their backsides and have a go at this job it looks easy walk on walk off,huh no such thing you get bacon pigs out of one of those slatted sweat houses then see how long their temper and office ideas last!! Yeah Boar pig I remember Brockelsbys and Brownbridge coming into Thirsk every week.

Hello Dalesman,

Unfortunately my grandad and great uncle Ken aren’t with us any longer, so I’m not totally clear on the business side of things (as a kid I was only really interested in the livestock and riding in the wagon).

Speaking to my dad and uncle, we’re pretty sure that their last wagon and the business did get sold on to Neal Kinder (Tom’s son) at Mere Beck.

The Walter Dib thing I’m less sure about.

Kind regards

Simon

Good evening all!

This is my first post!
I only found this forum by mistake! I was actually googling my Grand Father (Tomas Kinder) his son Neil is my Uncle! I was impressed to find them mentioned on here!

Sadly Tommy died 30+ years ago just before I was born so I never got to meet the legend but have heard many a tales of him!
Neil has retired from the road now. He did have his own cattle box & flat bed. Tommy also had a tipper haul;age business which my Dad inherited when he married my Mum Tommys daughter. Sadly Kinder Transport is no more :frowning:
I use to spen most my holidays in the wagon with Neil either on livestock or straw bales (small). He also use to relief drive for Woodhead’s, Alan Dawson (fastest wagon in the area) & Newhouse Bros to mention a few off the top of my head.
I shall mention this post to him & try to get a few stories & also pictures. Though I doubt many from him as I know the old farm house burnt down & they lost all their pictures many moons ago.
Anyway great post & I will try to get some great stories & pics for you! Plus if any of you could tell me any about Tommy or Neil!..

Thank you!

Hello Cattle Lass,

Great to hear from you. My uncle drove for your dad a couple of times I think, did he run a Leyland Constructor at one time? Neil purchased one of my grandad’s wagon’s, I think it may have been the Clydesdale or perhaps the Mercury? If you could ask Neil, I’d be most grateful. Pictures, now that would be a real result!!

My uncle also drove for Alan Dawson, and I too as a kid really enjoyed being carted about the country in the various motors he ran (the DAF 3600 was something else, it could fairly tank on). I’m most grateful to Alan for letting me tag along.

Whilst I don’t know your uncle personally, I think my uncle still see’s Neil from time to time, so I’ll mention that you’ve been in touch.

Kind regards

Simon

I always was led to believe that a Houghton livestock container was the finest you could buy? Bewick.

They’ve sadly been out of business for many years but, Drew Bros from Frampton Cotterell near Bristol used to build a lovely livestock container.

Bells were always well turned out from as far back as I can remember (late 60’s), and one of the few from that time to be still going.

Not an obvious choice of colours, but they do work well and look the part. Bell’s must be doing something right having been around since 1932, which is really good to see and abit of a rareity these days.

Cheers Boden.

Ralph Thorner (Pylle) bought new Commer 8 tonner G reg with a Carmichael Cattle box (Mahogany) I think they were from Frampton Cotterell , Charlie Brimble and Harold ■■■■ also also had Commers delivered at the same time with Carmichael bodies . I am sure I saw the the three trucks parked together at Ston Easton waiting to be delivered , I think the sales man was a Bill Edwards , Thorners traded in an Austin fg with a vincents body I think it went to Yeovil
