Woodheads wagons were and still are the best lookin motors in any livestock market followed by longthornes ( all flash but no graft ) and then last but not least richard brownbridge ( have ya still got a red face richard ) in his yellow erf with its brown double decker trailer from pontefract, best wagon greenwoods of esholt had was the F7 six wheeler with super singles on front that david woodhead sold em.
Who remembers the driver billy pool that worked for woodheads, the older he got the better he used to be, where’s young Joe woodhead ended up ?
Hi John I
A lot of the drivers/companies mentioned on this thread used to get into the NE marts. Tyneside, Hexham, Acklington, Darlington and Bishop Auckland to name a few.
Woodheads used to have a buyer at Tyneside every Friday. I presume they started as a wholesaler but were they taken over by Morrisons ■■ How many livestock vehicles did they have ■■ They were always well turned out.
We did mostly local work out of the above marts and I had never seen where they were based, but since retiring she who must be obeyed has dragged me down to Boundary Mills at Colne (both the new and old place) from the back of the old mill you could see the unloading docks and wash.
Cheers Tyneside
Thanks to all the contributors on here for the photographs and added information.

You’ve got to laugh, I see all these fancy cattle wagons of whatever size in and around colne going to woodheads/morrisons and I look
at some of the drivers and it makes me wonder,
How would they compare to some of the drivers of say 25 to 30 years ago that used to go into the same place as it was called then, Borthwicks ?
Take Brian Smiths drivers of Wardle, Rochdale - one of their bad days would make a new driver of 2014 commit suicide.
What about big Alan Worswick ( COWPUNCHER )and his drawbar trailer with the dolly at the front, he could reverse that trailer on to a 10p coin in any farm in the dark.
Big Cowpuncher incidently taught me to drive wagons at night, after I had finished working in the lairage for the day he would come back from wherever, tip and wash it out then off we went to parts around Holyhead picking up lambs/cattle and fetch em back to borthwicks.
Got to laugh - after I had been taught by him to drive by the moon with no lights on ( when there was nobody about ) and had the cattle prodder in the left hand side of my ribs due to falling asleep on many occasions and got washed under a cold tap or hosepipe just to wake up etc and looking back I was proud to know and work with such drivers and I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Alan used to collect cattle from our farm at Wray, if I remember correctly he had a red F86, then he bought a white Daf 2500 6 wheeler, I can still remember the noise Alan made when loading cattle.

Hi “Waitey” ,
Thanks for your photographs on here , but they are far too big to view.
Cheers , cattle wagon man.
Ha I did notice that.
They are straight from Houghtons facebook. I was expecting the board to auto re size them!
Waitey:
A few that Houghtons have done for us.
Super photos
both Chris Waites trucks immaculate, but the lorry and trailor best I have seen. I rember when a e jones Ludlow had 88 s and trailors doing continent and they were well a head of there time. but you look at Waites how things change’.

We had DAF F2000 reg no KUP 997N probably the same spec as this one. We bought it new in 1975 and it had a new 28ft 3 deck Newark livestock box.
Bit of a beast to drive (excuse the pun) with it’s backward 6speed splitter box and it was never that reliable.
Used to eat alternator brackets and a couple of piston rings broke up when it was about 6 months old. Cheers Tyneside
A change of colour scheme for R. & R. Newhouse`s 4 deck livestock trailer , seen here
at Hawes Auction Mart , September 2014.
Cheers , cattle wagon man.
Those Chris Waite photos are some of the best truck photos I have seen!
A few livestock ones from me:
and finally, a Chris Waite photo, but fortunately no livestock was hurt in the making of this
Hi, I’m looking for photos of my Grandad and Dad who are Tommy Staveley and Eric Staveley they lived at Maythorne in Ingleton and had various cattle wagons over the years. I am Tommy’s granddaughter and spent a lot of time riding around in the wagon and at cattle auctions. Would love to see any photos as unfortunately we don’t have many at all.
