Back in the day…

Hi
The trailer on the back of the Foden, was sold to Georges in somerset & I used it for about 4 years. It was actually a 3 decker ( no folding deck in the top).It carried a lot of pigs in it’s life.

Waitey - just seen one of yours on the M62 west bound approaching Leeds, lovely Scania !

Snapped recently at Houghton`s Parkhouse Coachworks , Milnthorpe .

Anyone know who it belongs to ■■ :unamused: :sunglasses:

The clue is in my “user-name” ( also is/was my CB handle ) … never actually done cattle wagons … just spent 6 yrs milking cows before I started this wagon driving lark

Andrew Atkinson`s recent addition to his fleet is this Volvo FM 6 wheeler.

Photographed at Crooklands Auction Mart last month.

Hi any one remember the two tone 8 wheeler erf,s with 3 deck williams boxes from a few years back used to see them going into st asaph sure they were from yorkshire

Hi They would belong to Norman Gates. He was a sheep buyer, he bought for the wholesale butchers. He had a place by the A59 at Billington, between Clitheroe and Blackburn.

Regards Dalesman

I think you’re talking about this wagons owner, I remember him coming into Borthwicks, Colne when I used to be in charge of the lairage - oh yes I’ve seen most of the wagons and drivers you are talking about year after year in the early 80’s etc.

Hi folks,

B. Howson & Son (Pontefract) - very tidy MAN.

Thanks to all the owners/drivers that give me a wave as they pass.

It’s a really great hobby, but to be honest I’ve always felt abit ackward taking photos at the side of the road  , so thanks guys  .

Cheers

Simon

I remember young howson coming into borthwicks, colne back in the day and winding him up to the point of fighting, oh yeah him and his pigs !

You’ve got to laugh, I see all these fancy cattle wagons of whatever size in and around colne going to woodheads/morrisons and I look
at some of the drivers and it makes me wonder,
How would they compare to some of the drivers of say 25 to 30 years ago that used to go into the same place as it was called then, Borthwicks ?
Take Brian Smiths drivers of Wardle, Rochdale - one of their bad days would make a new driver of 2014 commit suicide.
What about big Alan Worswick ( COWPUNCHER )and his drawbar trailer with the dolly at the front, he could reverse that trailer on to a 10p coin in any farm in the dark.
Big Cowpuncher incidently taught me to drive wagons at night, after I had finished working in the lairage for the day he would come back from wherever, tip and wash it out then off we went to parts around Holyhead picking up lambs/cattle and fetch em back to borthwicks.
Got to laugh - after I had been taught by him to drive by the moon with no lights on ( when there was nobody about ) and had the cattle prodder in the left hand side of my ribs due to falling asleep on many occasions and got washed under a cold tap or hosepipe just to wake up etc and looking back I was proud to know and work with such drivers and I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Truck Traveller:
Since a kid I’ve always been interested in Livestock Haulage, which comes in handy when you’re from Yorkshire, because in my opinion we have some of the smartest run fleets in the country. So I plan to post some of my own photos (new and old) on this thread to substantiate my claim, and hopefully others will join in too.

The companies that initially spring to mind are:

Fred Greenwood & Son
Longthornes of Hebden
David Cooper Transport
Chris Waite

Just to name a few…

I’ll place my trump card down first with a photo of Fred Greenwood’s Scania R580 V8 (as featured in Truck & Driver Nov 2010). This for me is one of the best looking trucks on the road today, even more amazing considering the type of work it does.

Thanks for looking -

Kind regards

Simon

its not bad for a second hand old topliner from east anglia

Norman Gates used to buy a lot of sheep at Tyneside mart every Friday. The ERF in the photo would take a load away on the Friday night and sometimes be back up,again first thing on the Saturday morning.

Would you buy a used truck from this man? :open_mouth:

The Pig Improvement Company always makes me smile. How? different colour, manicured trotters, chocolate orange flavour!

No ya wouldn’t buy any wagon that this driver had driven.
