Hiya,
Does anyone remember Bayford’s they was at Hunslet in the early 70s doing at
that time fuel oils but also general haulage with both tippers and tankers I do
believe they went entirely onto fuels and opened several filling stations I did a
spell for them around 1971 permanent nights on the tanks best paid job I ever
had but having been on distance work nearly all my working life I got bored so
chucked it and went back on distance work having moved to the North East.
thanks harry, long retired.

Here you are Harry they’re still on the go

Hiya,
Thanks for the info and pictures lads, it’s nice to know that at least one of my old
outfits is still in existence, I do remember it would be in the Wetherby area when
on my way North a billboard in a field either advertising their office being nearby
or their products, it would be the old A1 in those days.
thanks harry, long retired.

Hiya,
Thanks Larry I knew I was in the right area but couldn’t remember if it was just
North or just South of Wetherby I haven’t been that far South for years when I
go to Lancashire nowadays I use the old W J Ridings route over the A59 but in
the car I use the Blubberhouses bit if you got “captured” using “blubbers” when
driving for Ridings you was instantly dismissed, that part of the route was not
allowed, it is a dodgy bit of road for an artic in inclimate weather, going via
Ilkley and Otley did add a few miles though and if running late would risk it and
occasionally tramp the forbidden route but only if going to Newcastle.
thanks harry, long retired.

Come on Harry, Have you been having a few sly ones when your good ladies back was turned, It was Otley/Ilkley heading West , The firm I drove for forbid us to use Blubberhouses also, I was over there a couple of weeks ago visiting Skipton Market, Its a doddle in a car but still not the best of routes for HGVs, Although some of the drivers have to go that way, To waste disposal places & of course the odd Quarry that is still in action,Regards Larry.

Hiya,
Larry I never knew whether I was coming or going when I worked for Riding’s,
I only ever did the North East.
thanks harry, long retired.

Sorry Harry I was forgetting that you resided in that area, But they were the good old days in my book, We just got on with the job, And the closeness of the drivers in those days, Everyone stopped and gave a hand if you had a problem know matter what it was they were allways there to help you out, I don’t think its like that now mind you, Of course as the old saying goes or went, Theres Drivers & there is Drivers,   Regards Larry.

When looking back through my albums can so far only find one of your dad’s Fodens, but taken at three different stages of its life, including this photo in its mid life period.

Some other Fodens again from my albums which may be of interest

Barry/Gloves

Steelphalt had a lot of Fodens at one time, I occasionally took limestone dust into their plant but never managed to scrounge a load of tar back out of it! It was very dense tarmac from there, the slag content I guess?

Pete.

neilks:

The mechanic:
I’ve been trying to remember an other company in the Ackworth group and it came to me today. It was Thomas Hoptons. They were members of the
Transport Association and used to fuel up at the Caledonian Depot at Abington where Iworked after leaving school in 1966.

Tommy Hoptons yard was just over the river bridge in Castleford heading north up “Mary Panel” It’s now a Shell garage, taken over in 1963 and moved to willowbridge lane, Whitwood and re-Branded Onward Transport as all “saterlite” depots were (Livingstone, Birtley, Stockport, Purfleet etc) except for some reason Sheffield which although taking the two tone green livery kept the name Wheeler Road. - [and of course the Ackworth depot which were branded Ackworth Transport]
The depot is still owned by the Onward group but operated by another company.

OK I know this is a good bit old now but I was a driver for Tommy Hoptons (later became Onward) and I well remember bunkering up at Abington and a young lad there used to fill us up, I bet that was you! The Hopton depot was just over the river bridge lock lane Castleford. There was a weir right there on the river Aire and at that time there was a lot of detergent in that river. It was not unusual to come in to work early morning to find mountains of foam covering the trailers, you would have to fight your way thro it to get your trailer no and couple up to head up or down the road.
