Yes, I used to visit on Saturday mornings when Northern Commercials were at their old site in Mirfield. hence the reason for all the tractor units and NO trailers!!!. Similarly, used to visit Crossroad Commercials when they were based in Birkenshaw.

An age thing again, it is ‘The Biker’ who has the image of Wilsons Merc on his site NOT Dave the Renegade!!!

But here are a few more to jog memories

Barry

Driven both those Merc’s when I was at Wilson + the white 1617 in the picture.

The Archbold pics bring back a few memories . The Foden was a Tates of York who Archbolds bought out in around 1972 . The Fiats were all bought new when Archbold Truck got the franchise . the 619 is the oldest, they were put on general haulage for a couple of months to run in then of on the middle east runs then back on general when the mileage was too high for m/e work .The 684 s were on general but were not much good so when the 170 s came they were a much better truck .Note the wheel rims on the 619 and 684 s . People said they were a cheap truck but they got through some work . One driver was involved in an accident in the m/e the back axle hanger bracket was torn off , the gearbox which was suspended in the chassis between two propshafts was torn from its brackets and one of the diesel tanks torn off and with the help of chains and wire ropes managed to drive it all the way back ,most drivers would have given up there and then but he persevered and got it all the way home .It was repaired and made a few more trips to the m/e . One driver even smuggled a girl back but shopped her to immigration when she started messing about with other men when he was away , I know his name but wont name him on hear .

I worked for Alfred Hymas for one whole week back in the early 70’s  I went there looking for a job but they were’nt putting anybody on but was i interested in driving next week to cover for a bloke on holiday. I said yes but remember i don’t have any tipper experience, they said, as was usual back then, " don’t worry, you’ll pick it up." I enjoyed my week with them as a tipper driver

The picture posted by Gloves of lorries in Wetherby 1983 made me think of the drivers that used to park in the Wetherby car park in town in the early 70’s that i knew. Keith Pawlson on for Moores and Durhams, Trevor kemp for Moores, Kevin Horn for UFO and a couple i can’t remember the names of

Love Sponge - Ace was a guy based in Boroughbridge near the roundabout who ran the 3 trucks shown on P&O traction.

Just added a couple of more Wilson’s ones.
