Yet another pedestrian killed on the motorway

bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-ma … r-26959573

I have always thought it good practise, when possible, to pull into the middle lane if I see vehicles on the hard shoulder

I try even harder since a few months back, a bloke parked his car on the hard shoulder of an unlit stretch of the M6 at 3 in the morning, put his hazards on, wrote a suicide note on a text, then calmly waited for one of our firm to come by and walked out in front of a loaded 44 tonne DAF XF

The guy fulfilled his wish, but made a hell of a mess of the front of the unit, and to make things worse, the driver was on his first trip after a period of time off driving doing another job

This happened on a Thursday morning, and the driver was back down the road on the Saturday … I think he thought it was the best way of dealing with it

But … is it me, or do there seem to be more and more pedestrians being struck by vehicles on motorways ■■?

Second one on M61 in a couple of weeks.

I follow on twitter the North West police motorway group and its seems everyday there is someone reported walking on the motorway, what is up with these people

Another one on the M8 yesterday

The one on the M8 was an off duty police officer

Hard as it may sound but that is the best way of dealing with it.

could be to do with the railways being better fenced off nowadays

Did anyone see the truck which hit the guy on m 61? I passed him right before it happened. he was staggering and wearing dark clothing so near impossible to see. my mate passed 10 minutes later and he was spread over lane 1.

I was on the M5 near Avonmouth a few days ago and the matrix said Pedestrians In Road. Got round the corner and some natural selection dodger was pushing a bike along the hard shoulder.

To his credit though, he had a hi viz on :grimacing:

I have just parked up for the night and about about 9.30 tonight I passed an old bloke just north of Doncaster standing on the side of the road trying to thumb a lift.
It was where the A1m turns into the A1, with traffic hurtling past and no hard shoulder.
He looked like he was way past 70 and looked a bit confused so I pulled in to the next layby and rang the police, hope he is ok.

No respect, that’s what it is…

Gggary, not being funny, if not already done so could you please contact GMP / Lancs Traffic unit regarding this. You may be the last person to see the males actions before he got struck. This could also help support the account given by the driver involved.
I say GMP/Lancs as I’ve not been in work recently so don’t know who is dealing with it.

I was coming up the A1 on thursday and just before the M18 jn there was a young lad walking southbound pulling along a suitcase with another bag on his back. No real hard shoulder there either. :open_mouth:

I’d have rang the police as well with that one. I follow a missing persons account on twitter and you always see lots of older people often with issues such a Alzheimer’s missing. So you did a good thing.

if somebody wishes to kill themselves there is not a lot you can do about it so yeah the best thing is to carry on working if someone walks out in front of you,my brother is a train operator on the underground and he said to me one day that in all the years he has been on there he has never had one under,i replied why he would want that,he said you get 3 months off on full pay, fair play i thought cos as i said you cannot stop someone who is set on killing themselves so you might as well get something out of it,harsh or not thats the way i see it as well, although you would not get that time off in transport, employers would probably just tell you to accept it and get on with it

Had to have been a 460, a 510 would have passed before he got into the road. Shouldn’t laugh I know but that comment was brilliant

Someone did it to one of my stepdads firm a while ago, what makes it worse imo is the local papers made the guy out to be a saint, all the family, everything to live for and all that crap. Surely something must have been wrong for him to try and hug a moving Volvo FH13…
