Hi everyone im a newbie driver so still wet under the ears, and just looking for bit of clarification on the working time directive rule as most ppl i have asked seem to have different versions of what they think is how it should be done when taking breaks, so can anyone tell me if my eg. below is correct or not, and is there a simple method to understand it quickly haha im bit confused. Thanks
eg. ( if i drive 4.5 hrs, take 45 min break, work for 1.5 hrs i then need to take another 30min break)
So basically the drivers time and wtd are separate as in, you take a break for each one separately even though they run concurrent, other quick question is wtd only calculated by the amount of time you spend in other work mode, or is it calculated from the minute you start driving
Calculated from when you start your shift
For most people the 4.5 hours rest comes before the wtd rest unless you don’t do a lot of driving like local multidrop then usually your under the wtd
Think i follow you now, i was getting it into my head that it was only whilst you were in other wprk that it was calculated, thanks for the help [emoji16][emoji1362]
Mate I’m new to it too and it takes a bit of getting used to and remember you can’t have a break at the start or end of yeah shift . It’s got to interrupt you working time , so if yeah do have a break at the end make sure you do at least 1 min of other work before finishing lol and a til take 16mins and 31mins breaks as the tacho can mess up sometimes
Cheers mate didnt even know about the extra minutes on your breaks, they dont tell you these things when studying or training i guess you learn these things as you go
6 - 7 work
7 - 9 drive
9 - 10 work
10 - 12 drive
Now got to 6 hours for WTD so 15 min break needed which also counts as the first of the 15 (+30) for driving time break
12.15 - 1 work
1 - 1.30 drive
Now got to 4.30 driving time so the second of the split driving time break needed which must be at least 30 mins - also counts for WTD so the 6 hour working time break is also reset
2 - 4 drive
4 - 6 work
6 - 8 drive
Now got to 6 hours WTD again so 15 min break needed
8.15 - 9 work
15 hours shift completed with all breaks taken for WTD and driving time requirements

This is where those doing the initial driver CPC should have the mod 2 theory as a test on the regs and not be as it is at the moment and those not needing inital CPC should be made to take a compulsory 7 hour course on the regs
Yeah when i was doing my module 2 it gives you all the basic knowledge, but things like adding an extra minute onto break so the tacho registers it wasnt something i was told and the WTD was pretty basic too and not explained in great depth whilst studying

Driving breaks also count as breaks for the RT(WT)R and where appropriate vice versa.
This stuff about having to add a minute to breaks because the digital tachograph gets them wrong is a myth spread by people who are not using the tachograph correctly, it’s certainly true that you needed to add a few minutes to breaks when using an analogue tachograph but it’s not necessary with digital tachographs.
Taking a 45 will reset both driving time and wtd but you need to take a min 15m break within 6 hours of starting your shift if you haven’t exceeded the 4.5hrs drive time

And don’t forget that no more than 6 hours of work can be done in a shift without a 15 min break as many get caught out on the back end of the shift
