I live in Aberdeen and the jobs here are not that great.
It’s all Haulage companies and I’d rather not work for Haulage companies as I have before and the only way to make money is to do ridiculous hours and basically have no home life.
I currently do fridge work which I enjoy but the company I work for don’t pay that well.
I was thinking of moving to possibly Glasgow or anywhere along the central belt or maybe further for better work opportunities as all the big shops have RDC’S there and they tend to pay the best and it would be the same sort of work as I’m doing now so I wouldn’t just be sitting all day so I could do some grafting.
Anyone on here moved for work and do you think it was worth it?
One other thing to bear in mind, higher paying areas also tend to have higher living costs, so even though you might be on a bit more money, you could end up paying a lot more for housing, bills etc
Plenty of options along the M8 corridor for work but don’t come here expecting any better money than you’re earning up in Aberdeen, the rates are just as poor. You’ll also find agencies have a monopoly on absolutely everything, finding a decent direct employed position is a rarity.
I PERHAPS should not be contributing to this dilemma, drivers have about working in or near home, as i am now 75 and my whole life in transport ,well near enough…
I followed the money if i say so my self i was a experienced fridge man like hundred of others i lived in BLACKPOOL and worked in Reading,London, AYLESBURY, Southern Ireland, DANEMARK and yes away for 3/4 weeks 3 sons ,at home ,but needs must , i was not on my own ,lots of men travel and stayed away from home for work and money.SO NOTHING NEW…
you could always consider buying a basic camper.
park it somewhere handy around the midlands and work for the best rates you can find 3 weeks on and 1 off home again?
treat yourself to a travel inn now and again.
work the weekend shifts and take your day off on a tuesday, then a quick sleazyjet home again.
book early and its only a few quid travelling.
it will look and feel like your doing european work but at least you will be driving on the right side of the road.

I am thinking of doing this, I have a camper van and after passing my test thinking of trying to live in it wherever I can find a job.
Not sure where I could park it safely would most employers let you park in their yards? Or is that a big no no.
probably health and insanity would be the excuse to stop you parking like that, but you will be limping so they wont want anything to do with you within 2 mins of your shift starting or ending.
friends, relatives,or whatever in the general locale of where you want to be based.
it could be a nice wee quiet pub,b&b where you could wangle parking in exchange for getting your tea every day and a shower and b&b every few days.
perish the thought, but its even possible a friendly soul in here might be able to assist.!!!

Thanks for the help everyone think I might make a move place I’m looking at is cheaper to live in and the pay is better so makes sense to me.
Here’s a possible solution - just on Indeed today (13oct19). Turner’s at Glasgow looking for tramper drivers. I used to live in Aberdeen in the 90’s and know how difficult you may be finding getting work because Aberdeen is so far. It may be a 2.5 hour drive each way but if you do that for a few weeks - perhaps a B&B the night before.
Once you like it there… you can consider moving. I am actually working for Turner’s now in the Fens. Pay rate varies which is a bit strange but you should get £615-£700 per week.
