my brothers asked me if its possible as he might be moving soon and was wondering if he could hire one and i drive it for him, obv not for any sort of payment like a job.

yes you can hire one for moving, before my farther in law died he hired one out to help my brother in law move from Liverpool to where he is now and he also had an HGV licence
You need C1 on your licence (or C or CE) and no tacho is required as it is under 7.5 tonnes - it does not count as anything towards your tacho or RTD(WTD) for private use
You don’t need a tacho, but it may be worth putting one in. Mark it “Personal use”, and bin it a week or 2 after you’re done. If it’s digi, then don’t use your card, just take printouts at the beginning and end of the time, write on the back “Personal use- moving house” and keep it a few weeks just in case. Better safe than sorry.
gogzy,
going through the same situation myself.
two of the three companies I have approached have said “yes” but require a letter from my solicitor or estate agent on letterhrad paper to show that I am moving.
The third said OK no problem, didn’t even ask what driving licence I held.
One other that I approached would only rent to a operator licence holder and would not do private hire at all.
To be honest, after checking prices and etc I have found that it is not a lot dearer to use one of the smaller removal companies.
To hire, the best quote I got for a 7.5 tonne without a tail lift was £120 per day and as I would need it for saturday , I would need to pick it up Friday and return Monday AM. (not open Sunday) They classed that as 3 days = £360 ,+ extra insurance for excess etc.
not sure if that was plus VAT or not
best removal quote was £448.plus VAT
or just borrow one from work like i did…just had to sign a disclaimer for company insurance saying i would be laible for first £1000 of any damage, plus free diesel.
thanks guys,
pecjam as i currently dont have a job i cant borrow one and as im the only hgv licence holder in the family eg over 7.5 ton im the natural choice to drive it. that and he3s my brother

Rog, you’d better 'tiptoe through the tulips as you leave as the sun aint gonna shine anymore with stuff like that
Tiger.
23 years old - nae chance,if you are under 25 rental companies barely let you rent a mid-size car never mind a 7.5tonner.
From personal experience, I’d suggest that hiring a 3.5 tonne box van would serve you better, especially if it’s only a short move and you can do two trips.
Providing you load the van well, it’s surprising just how much you can get in to one of those, especially if it’s got a Luton body. Weight shouldn’t be an issue.
Other advantages; lower body height, easier to manoevre, and if he’s got a driveway at the new place you might even get it up to the door.
Remember to leave the mashing tackle till last then it’s first off!
might as well hire a Luton just as big
Gogzy, try matt purdie in whitburn or blackburn, whichever it is. he is a removals firm but he hires out vehicles for moving. i hired one from him when i moved 3 years ago. for a £20 deposit you get straps and blankets included plus the trucks are specced with the wooden spars along the sides. they have a tail lift too. i think i paid £60 for the day
