Worst UK truck stop ever visited

Pat Hasler:
In the UK, Swindon LOL.

In the USA, exit 21B on the NY thruway (I-87), disgusting poop hole. Second place goes to the original Rhode Island truck stop, at one time it was the only truck stop in the state, rump steak served with plastic utensils LOL.

Instead of chips and peas? ■■:smiling_face:

For the disgusting food and the miserable woman who serves it - Markham Moor.

In the same vein…

Stopped there a while ago with the missus, and had always found the place ok, but on this particular occasion asked the old bag behind the window at the entrance if they had female showers, only to be told very rudely that they didn’t despite the fact that the girls behind the food counter took my money for a one, and she wouldn’t refund me it until I kicked off an almighty stink about it.

To be fair, my missus would have used the mens if I had have been stood outside the cubicle as a prude she most certainly isn’t, but we had a long day that day and she couldn’t be arsed with anymore drama.

You would have thought though, with the growing amount of female drivers these days, a couple of ladies showers in there would be a good idea.

Ken.

Stood at the serving bit and decided on the steak pie

“Carrots or parsnips”

“Can’t I have both”

“Carrots or parsnips”

If I have to park there again, and it could be so good because the facilities are fine, I will do my own food.

That could have gone for ■■■■■■■ ages if it had been me asking for it. I really ■■■■■■■ hate people that talk to you like that:
“Carrots or parsnips” “Can’t I have both” “Carrots or parsnips” “Can’t I have both” “Carrots or parsnips”
“Can’t I have both” “Carrots or parsnips”“Can’t I have both” “Carrots or parsnips”
“Can’t I have both” “Carrots or parsnips” “Can’t I have both”

And then if she’d folded and said yes, it would have been “stick up yer jacksie”

Nah, what I’d have done if she’d folded and said yes then I’d have said “just carrots please, i don’t like parsnips!”

my own personal worst was quernhow - not only was the food almost on a MSA pricing scale and worse, you paid top dollar to park in a rutted potholed ‘park’ sit in chairs from 1972 which were not cleaned from new, and if you needed the toilet you may as well have ■■■■■■ in a bucket.

Stibbington ‘diner’ . I don’t buy this ‘you’re lucky to have it, we’re an independant’ bull. They take these things on to make some money. It’s laziness. Same as the crap B and B I’ve found myself in in London. Sub standard dump charging a fortune just because ‘it’s London’. Laziness. Very very few good truckstops in uk. Most were dumps when I last tramped and even more dumps when I went back to day driving for a bit 12 years later

I gave Swindon another try last week, it changed hands a couple of months ago and was surprised…

…surprised to find out the food is worse. Actually WORSE. Absolutely inedible.

I don’t mind giving places the benefit of the doubt when they get taken over but Swindon have made ZERO effort to improve the food.

Agree on Swindon, I went after the so called refurbished premises .
It is even more untidy, the meal was inedible with half a pot of pepper in it.
The gravy was water with a weak brown colour .
The man serving me had one hand up to his ear while on his mobile phone, how rude is that .
I see drivers carrying bags of food from Sainsbury next door, I don’t blame them.

Surely Chippenham t stop deserves a warm hand on its entrance, picturesque.pleasant staff.superb provender.even a kind of farm shop for the adjacent community.Deffo one of the top drawer establishments.

robroy:
Doug’s Diner Penrith. (I called in there one Sat morning and it was locals that outnumbered truckers, which says it all.

and the occasional Highways traffic officers.

I have no complaint about any truck stop food quality anywhere after being at home for a few weeks and having to endure the wife’s cooking !

Dougs Diner in Penrith is my favourite of the lot. A real hidden gem and always space to park whatever time you roll. The food is all homemade (even the chips) and you get loads of it, and it’s included in the parking price, lovely clean shower and wash room, and the ladies that do the cooking are really nice. Try out the Dorset apple cake and custard. But don’t tell anyone, let them carry on using the huge Penrith truck stop and it’s rip off cafe. Once you’ve tried this place you’ll never go back to the main truck stop.

Yeah I’m a big fan of it too, showers are always immaculate, food not cheap but generally good size portions and good quality.

Worst one for me,Ross on Wye cattle market, dire and dirty Portacabin for a cafe.

fair few drivers said Swindon,[as I did at the start]when it reopened I went back in there to buy a paper [no newspapers]apparently they were having a dispute with WHsmiths, was assured it would soon be settled, went back a week later and again no newspapers, third time again no papers, havent been back since, now 2 months since,i expect it hasn’t changed,if the owners want to make it good they need to put a serious amount of money into it,new toilets, new catering area, etc, seems their way of thinking is we are only drivers and will accept it as it is now, they will find out in the long run that drivers will not accept dumps like Swindon anymore

Think you’ll find it fills up as it is. The foreigners pile in there as its on snap. Had a small breakfast there the other day and it was perfectly adequate - nothing special, but not vile.

Salt box at Hatton on the old A50 serves particularly poor food. As far as proper truck stops I’d say Shepshed is the one that sticks in my mind. Diesel pumps rarely pump properly, filthy toilets and showers and the food was God awful. Used to work for a firm that has an account there and I’d book myself in to wash my trailer out then go and park at tescos in Loughborough for edible tea/breakfast.

After reading the posts, one does wonder why H&S hasn’t been looking into this… It always seems to be about how much fat a dish can contain
But honestly, I’m always surprised by the fact that ze Germans got their act together if it comes to clean sanitary (autohof and the services), I’m not the biggest fan of the German cuisine, but it’s still better then what you get at some English counterparts…
Best thing though (and certainly worth a debate) is the French cuisine, I’ve always loved it!

When I’m in the U.K. I usually try to park up for the night at a industrial estate and just go to the nearest pub or hotel (last one doesn’t come cheap though)
Worst case scenario, I get the old stove out and do some cooking myself…

One’s I’ve attendent and weren’t that bad;

Stobbie’s truckstop Carlisle
Truckers rest cafe Cannock
Forgot the name, but that one in Lockerbie
Truckstop J23 Shepshed

Thats a shame re the saltbox. It was ok around 88-90 and one i always headed to if in the area, sounds like another one gone downhill…
