I’m sure I’m not the only one on here that has gone over from the dark side to Linux. I’m using Ubuntu 11.04 as a dual boot system but I only use windoze for one program. Anyone else care to share experiences with any of the Linux variants around?
I use antix m11
It works very well for me
I was a bit reluctant (battled with Linux variants years and years ago) but now have Leeenux (a version based on Ubuntu netbook edition) on my EEEPC. It was very easy to install and it works a treat.
Everything apart from web browsing and email I found to be a complete siedge, ripping music, converting DVDs, games a complete no no.
Fair play if it works for you but I can’t be bothered learing everything again !!
No more Micro$oft here. After years of suffering BSOD, crashes, viruses, worms, trojans and all the security holes, it has got to be Linux. Aptosid is my favourite, Debian hot and spicy. Puppy Linux works brilliantly on older hardware, simple and blazingly fast. Best place to look for and compare different flavours of Linux is Distrowatch.com. Ubuntu is favourite for newcomers. Gets better and better with each update. Very easy to try it out, without installing it to the PC. Plenty of help and tutorials out there. Lightweight Portable Security (LPS) is a Live-Linux system produced by the United States of America’s Department of Defense. It is a free download. They reccomend it for online safety. Need one say more?

Most definatly not!
I will try this LPS thing this weekend.
I have been looking for something a bit similar, Pretty much something that will boot fast, and just have a browser.
I don’t care too much about the safety stuff, but a tiny fast distro to find something online (like maps, or whatever) would be nice.
I will post a little review when I am done.
Well, I don’t think I am going to use LPS much.
It is probably very well thought out, as it can find my somewhat “difficult” hardware.
I have tried it on 1 netbook, and 2 laptops.
It just starts, and works! Great! Sound and video works, and it even display battery capacity, which has been a problem in some other distros, on my netbook.
But it is kinda slow, even if it runs from ram.
I didn’t dig into it all that much, and it seems they have made it very difficult to add stuff to it, like a browser you like.
It is possible to mount your hard drive, but it is not easy enough, which is ok, as it is not supposed to do that.
It is not persistent, and if you reboot, you have lost all your work, and settings. Use an usb stick to store your stuff, and it works ok.
My opinion is that you would be better off with any other live distro, like puppy, or something, if you have to borrow someones computer.
I will try to look into how it works a bit, as it does very well in some areas ( hardware detection)
But I probably won’t use it.
Otoh, LPS has been very useful, as it lets the kids play stuff, without wrecking your computer
