So now there will be a national shortage of salt-what will I put on my fish and chips?

Paprika and chilli…

Along with non-brewed condiment. That stuff in the chippy isn’t vinegar.

From 2024, British Salt will become the UK’s first producer of pharmaceutical grade salt, which will be used for medications such as oral rehydration salts and life-saving haemodialysis treatment.

So despite the UK’s extensive history in industrial/pharmaceutical chemicals, and all the big name companies we have here, and the abundance of source material (we’re surrounded by the sea FFS…), no one thought of extracting and purifying something we could sell? I thought we were supposed to be big on innovation?

I suppose next thing people will be saying we’ve closed most of our coal mines and are now importing it from half-way around the world (notably US and Australia.)

Oh, hang on a minute…

Too true, it’s just dilute industrially-produced food-grade acetic acid (with colourings).

Same as the “alcohol” in WKD or Cactus Jack, and all the other brightly-coloured, trendy, young-peoples drinks isn’t made by “brewing” in the traditional sense, it’s industrially-produced, food-grade ethanol which is delivered to the bottling plant in tankers, then is diluted before having “colourings and flavourings” added. I used to visit one of those places on Teesside regularly.

I prefer fermented apple juice from Somerset my self.

At least if its the cloudy stuff with bits floating in it you can be confident it was once part of an apple.

I was introduced…

To paprika chips in Goldthorpe some years ago. I’d finished tipping at Aldi and found an Ali Cooks Everything place on the high street. After 7pm the town is empty and you can park in the bus stop and walk over. On my first visit they asked if I wanted paprika chips, I asked what the difference was and they said, ‘much more flavour and 10p’.

In my spice rack at home, I have paprika with chilli and paprika with onion.

Nom nom nom.
