I dont remember Williams Bros being at Queensferry, but do remember thier yard near Buckley, used to have my unit serviced in thier workshops. Handy as I lived in Northop hall then so was an easy walk home along the old disused railway line.
rapidgem:
I’ve been on the lookout for photos of Williams Bros wagons from their Queensferry yard, but so far this is the only one I’ve managed to come across which was based at Denbigh:-
I can remember their high sided tippers bringing coke to the school boiler-house in the 60’s
Can anyone help with more photos of Williams Bros? Any info would be appreciated.
Cheers - RR
Lovely old photo, bet she was a pig to drive, especially with that dangler on the back.
Thanks for your posting Coddy, Williams Bros’s yard in Queensferry was on the old A548 (as it was then) going towards the blue bridge on the right hand side just after the railway bridge - Flintshire Caravans now occupy the yard and offices. They had a fleet of Bedford TK’s and Atki’s when I remember them in the 60’s and later Scania 110’s and 111’s. I think they were still there in the mid- 70’s although I’m not sure when they closed the Queensferry yard.
I can remember them in Alltami (nr Buckley) later.
KW:
But going by the QF on the front of the trailer plate,it may well have been based at Queensferry.
more interestingly, what was the trailer - looks unusual?
Could it be some early kind of block/brick trailer with a type of hiab on it,
as theres been a block/brick plant in LLAY for many years as theres some name board on the front of the trailer, thats my guess anyhow.

i reckon you’re bang on niam, seem to recall seeing a similar experimental unit fitted to an aec 8 legger in a brochure - mystery solved in record time!

Don’t know how many trailer builders there were when the road train was in its prime, but the most commonally used drag was a Dyson.
The trailer behind the Scania looks as if it could have a steering back end.
I clearly remember a 280O DAF of Williams Bros in the 80’s - I was 9 at the time. I lived in Chester and a friend lived on a housing estate halfway through completion, meaning lots of trucks to look at! This machine arrived one day, an impressive machine to say the least, and the reg? CMA 699X, hows that for memory
I used to walk 3 miles at about 5am to their yard in Denbigh when I was 15 (1981) & sleep under a taup on a trailer & wait for a driver to come in to out with!!!
An article about the wagon and drag appeared in some vintage magazine a few years back ,possibly the Classic Atkinson club magazine. The trailer behind the Scania looks like one that was operated by an outfit in the 70’s with yellow and grey ERF A series and Merc1626’s that steered the axles via a fixed coupling to the rear of the unit. This was on block work and was supposed to help in confined spaces. I’ m thinking Plasmor but they operated Foden 8 leggers.
gnasty gnome:
About 1985 they did a lot out of BRS Melton Mowbray on the Pedigree Petfoods contract. Most of them were on DAF 2800’s IIRC.
i remember the atki wagon and drag coming into the old manchester abatoir on water street.the chap at the front of the photo was “big glynn” who always drove the atki. he also did part time i believe for LE JONES. I beleive he has now passed away.
Hi,
Early 70,s Williams bros (wales) also had a depot at Peterchurch nr. Hereford, only a small depot they ran Scania 110/80s, Atkinson units and Bedford KM rigids. I used to go there some Saturday mornings to service the Scania units.
