I think its best that unless we know the facts of the recovery, the volatile 25 tonne load, the king pin that was on its limits in a flimsey fridge trailer, the middle axle that was buried in between the intact concreted kerbs and the 3 n/s brake chambers that would have been pulled off along with the fridge derv tank and the tank on the unit the n/s landing leg embedded in the ground and the request by the services not to close any roads and the customers request of the crane and the fact that vehicle needed to drive away swiftly to his drop with no damage what so ever, but what do i know!
But then i only did the job!

Basically what I said first then, it’d have knackered the lot to pull it out.
Its fair to say that Darren( Clark Motor Enginering) who attended has a fair idea of the best and most cost effective way of facilitating a prompt and professional recovery with absolute minimal damage either to the casualty or consequential damages ie ground site loss of earnings to site lorry etc from further damage or potential contamination etc even the 600 litres of spilled derv could cost thousand s in clear up new tarmac traffic management etc .( I think I am correct in saying they had the first 100 ton truck and the first 100 ton crane in the uk J W Hardwicks of Ewell) So its fair to say derv has run through his blood for many years as does heavy lifting experience.
There are many ways to do ANY job but this job was handled professionally and correctly and to the satisfaction of all involved the owners their uk agents the dangerous goods safety advisor the services management team and the emergency services .
As for the services being badly designed wtf so klaus manages to drive across europe in his 41 ton artic in his purple sergio tachini shell suit but doesnt manage to get into a svcs? please they are one of the best svcss in the south there are seperate parking for car transporters the security on an evening asks fridgesto park at the far end together.
Stop stone throwing their is a difference between a professional curiosity and ignorant armchair expertise if you werent there you dont really know.
Darren, please don’t think I’m having a pop at you, I’m not. If I came across as throwing stones, that certainly wasn’t my intention.
Questioning things and establishing reasoning is how we learn, and every day’s a school day!
Sadly in this day and age, nearly all contracts/customers demand we don’t put pics of jobs onto social media sites, which is a ■■■■ shame as we’ve got loads to share. By seeing others techniques is another good way of learning.
So it’s nice to see this job discussed on a forum, as the pics have come from a passer by, the recovery lads won’t get wrong for them being there.
Darren, out of curiosity could a rotator have done the same job as the crane? Or would it not have the reach/capacity to lift out that far?
We don’t have a rotator, to date we’ve never had a heavy job that we haven’t been able to recover with conventional top booms. Still, suppose a lot of people said that when top booms were a new technology ‘ye can’t beat the 750’…
Well we still have 750 gear on the fleet, and though it’s still handy, there’s a lot of jobs that top booms beat it on.
cieranc:
Got to be cheaper than hiring a crane. I would expect the crane hire to be over a grand at an absolute minimum.
job we did, the police wanted the contents of a 40’ container removing from the scene. 2 options, spend a day handballing bits onto trucks and running it back to base, or hire a crane and just lift the container out.
We got quotes from 4 crane hire places and the cheapest was £1350, just to lift the container onto our trailer.
Spot on with that cost brother in law driver one of ainscoughs crane (that could have been his as he is down that way currently) interesting bit of info on cranes, they have no tachos can work as long as they want without break and dont need a hgv licence!!
Hi cieranc
In my opinion i dont think a 60 ton / 54 tonne metre rotator would of had the capacity or the reach to have lifted it, i estimatede the lift at 24 tonne and the crane driver had 22 tonne on his scales and we got the crane in and out cheaper than you might think than a rotator, also with a rotator you also dont get the 3 other wreckers 2 vans and a incident manager and 10 spare parts dressed as fireman!
As i have saidthe job was done as per instructions at a reasonable cost with no closures or damage all parties happy.

He has class 2 but no DCPC required, when he first went on the cranes no HGV (and he has been told there still isnt one needed!!) better let him know you need a Class 2 Licence unless just onsite, Bizarre when you consider the weight and size of these!!
