I am a bus driver and last week I think I may have been caught by a red light camera. I have not recieved a NIP yet but I just want to know if I will be offered a course or not if I have been caught.
The catch is I already have 6 points on my licence from a mobile phone offence (cu80) from march 2018. This was in my car. I was never offered a course for that and received a £200 fine and 6 points on my licence. My operations manager seems to think that if I have been caught that I wont be offered a course because of of a previouse conviction. Though I have read online that if its my first red light offence and nothing similar then I will be offered a course. Plus there are two other drivers I work with who have been caught at the same camera over the last few months who have both been offered a course, and one of them already has 6 points on their licence for speeding. So as you can understand im a bit confused as to why my OM seems sure I wont be offered a course when the other guy did with 6 points on his licence aswell already.
I have never done a course for any other driving offence before and this is my first ever possible red light offence as I said I havent had a NIP through yet. The cctv guy at my work thinks that I may here something about it though. The incident happened on 30/1/20. I am also based in Derby in the east midlands.
If anyone could share there thoughts on this for me I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you
I did a course after being caught by a red light camera in Nottingham in 2017 with a clean licence.
IIRC the offer letter turned up in less than a week.
Course was a bit cheaper than speed awareness, (£80).
Hope that helps?

Thank you. Just the existing points im curiouse about. Thank you for the reply
You can argue it. Make sure you check the time it states the traffic light had been red for. I got done by one in 2017 it stated the light had been red for 1.2seconds. After months of letters back and forth i asked for a court hearing . They sent me on the course instead.

If I argue it can it turn worse for me. Did it cost you much to take it to court? Did you already have points on your licence?
I had no points .They gave me the course after i asked to go to court. As i said earlier check the timings for going over the red light. If its about 1s range try to fight it .You have points for mobile phone use not bad driving. Request pics from the camera they will show your speed it will also help if it was safe for you to stop. Some of the traffic lights go from green to red in a few seconds.
The Red Light course they offer involves driving through a level crossing when the lights are flashing, you have 10 attempts and if you survive, you go free!
Terry T:
I hope there were no children waiting to cross at these lights
Agree.
Always frightening when parents, with their kids in tow, drag them across roads with the red pedestrian light showing.
Probably the same idiots who honk horns at jaywalking pedestrians when in a car.

Not being funny mate, and I’m the last one to pass judgement, but you ain’t putting yourself in a very good light,… a bus driver going through a red light, and one who has been nicked for using his phone.
I’m surprised one or two certain members on here ain’t crucifying you tbh.
And before you ask…No I’m far from being perfect.
It reminds me of that old gag about …‘My depressed Uncle tried to top himself by driving over a cliff, he survived but his 40 passengers didn’t’.

And a couple of your colleagues have been done with the same camera, come on for ffs

Funny you should say that. My uncle lost his house, his wife left him and his dog ran away.
He drove to the edge of a cliff and sat there with his head in his hands, ready to drive off and end it all but thanks to the sheer will of human kindness, people all pulled together
and convinced him not to do it and that his life was worth living.
Even now, 20 years later, he is grateful to every single one of the passengers on his bus that day.
If you do get a NIP ask for the photograph from the camera that caught you…
I received a NIP last year for blocking a Yellow Box Junction in a place that I have never been to, I asked for the photographic evidence but what they sent me was not my car, not even the same make or colour, yet it was my number plate!
It was, of course, withdrawn when I asked them for additional evidence…
The course you would have to do is the “What’s Driving Us” course which costs around £80
You’re only eligible if you haven’t been on a similar course within the last 3 years and the light wasn’t at red for 3 seconds or more before you went through it.
I got caught in Southend years ago and had to do one to keep licence clean, virtually everyone else was there for mobile phone use.
If you have to do a course don’t be late, one guy was 3 mins late and was refused entry, lost his £80, got a fine and 3 points

I think you’re right with that.
I got a NIP for a red light offenceand when I checked the website I was able to see the pics.
If iirc, the time limit was 2 seconds, I was able to do a driver awareness course, anything over and it was points and a fine.

When my time comes, I want to go peacefully and serenely in my sleep, just as my uncle did. Unlike the passengers on his bus, who were screaming, shouting and ■■■■■■■■ themselves…
