Why hate the HATO

Rob K:
Police rejects. Only in the job for the power - fact.

That quote has finally proved to me you talk out of your ■■■ more than i would have thought is possible, there are 1 or 2 rejects,
Remember Sarge with his strapline

sarge:
Looking for work again - I thought I’d escaped from The Road, but redundancy happens to the best of us…

some are rejects for a reason :sunglasses: :smiling_imp:

Anyway i’ll leave you to deal with your issues :waveysmilie:

Well I wouldn’t expect someone doing the job to agree… :bulb: I guess the truth hurts, hence your comments. But that’s fine with me. You may get yourself a few fanboys off here but the truth is that the majority of the population hates you (collectively) - and that is a fact. Perhaps if your job actually involved doing some stuff of use rather than “leaning on the armco” with rolls of tinfoil in your hands and coning off motorways for 13 weeks at a time because someone has a puncture you may get liked a bit more. Also minding your own [zb] business and not flashing at motorists doing 90 on a deserted M62 followed by ‘slow down’ hand gestures when coming alongside to see what your [zb] problem is. If that isn’t being a police wannabe then I don’t know what is.

Once again: police rejects. Only in the job for the power - fact.

edit: typo

I don’t see how i’m doing the job for the power, we’ve got none! I had far more power with civvies when I was a military copper than I do as a HATO.

I am not going to agree with Rob K for the sake of it, but unfortunately what he says rings true with me. I have seen the HATO pretending to be policeman, jumping about in the carriageway because there is a 1997 Metro with a puncture. I saw the zb thing about 1000m away. I am sat far enough away not to bother Aunt Mildred and George behind the barrier, yet these yellow clad goons jump out in the road arms waving and force me to pull in front of another faster motorist.

Obviously there are a few of you and I have never come across the consummate professionals that frequent this forum, who then stick together like politicians caught in the secretaries pants.

When I am unfortunate enough to need a HATO, please ask me again and I will reappraise the situation. Like there are poor lorry and car drivers, there are some very poor professional traffic officers!

I can only say i’m embarrassed that you’ve only met the numpties in our ranks, I know we have them and I try to distance myself from them. Hopefully you’ll meet one of the good guys to change your perception of us.

I think it’s because they think they are part of the police but in reality they have no law enforcement powers but enough about the hato’s. I have no idea why some drivers hate them they are just doing their best within the powers they have to keep the traffic flowing.

We are nothing to do with the police whatsoever. I think you’re confusing us with PCSOs who are employed by the police. We are civil servants employed by the Department for Transport (Highways Agency)

I broke down in my car on the M1 last year with my wife and 7 year old son, Hato showed up with Tomatoe soup for all 3 of us and the offer of Foil blankets

I think overall they do a fine job on our terrible roads that are packed full of terrible drivers.

I liken them to the PSCOs, they end up scurrying around doing all the crap jobs for the police and leave the police to concentrate on policing. I actually think they do a good job under difficult circumstances and yes some are numpties but why tar them all with the same brush.

I’ve never had a problem with HATO’s or VOSA, on the few occasions our paths have crossed I’ve found them to be polite and helpful, I may not agree with everything they do but then I don’t agree with everything anyone does, on the whole I think they do a good and worthwhile job
I don’t doubt that there are a number of jerk-offs who are HATO’s but you always get a bad apple or two in any job, especially where the job appears to carry a little authority.

The trouble is we don’t see any of the valuable work they do. What exactly do they do?

Picking up the debris from the carriageway is valuable enough for me.

I’ll make it simpler for you as obviously you a had a reject teacher as you are either hard of reading or choosing not to answer

What is your problem with the Extruckers, Ex BIB, Exparamedics, fire and rescue, recovery etc, etc .

Back in 2007 I found out a bit about what a shift for a HATO entails.

And that is what we expect, a road patrol and in an incident, to tow or push the vehicles to the hard shoulder, but how many have said on here, that "it is not our job? “We must leave it to the recovery guys or they throw their teddies on the ground.”

If I see a pretty damsel with a puncture, my second thought is to change her wheel, not, oh! what will health and safety say if they see me?

If I can clear the carriageway, it gets dragged, pulled, pushed, whatever it takes to get it out of the way. As for changing wheels, I have been known to “verbally assist” people to change the wheel.

Coffee that mustve been an interesting day out.
Personally I don’t hate them and I’m sure they do a good job in often difficult/dangerous circumstances. And as for highway man some people around here object to non-truckers daring to post on here but anyone who has a valid point is welcome in my book and the highwayman does actually seem like a top man and if you ever want to give a day trip I’d be very interested in learning more about your work.

Unless it’s a heavy now according to the latest ‘update’ as there are procedures in place for it to be done within 45min in if it needs ‘recovery’ :unamused:

Yeah, as said before me and others have had a coffee without biscuits and a ‘fact find’ for ‘overassisting’ damsels or blokes in distress with or without anklebiters in a rock a tot or pram.

Leave it with me, I have a contact in that part of the world. I’ll see if it’s possible and let you know.
