Why did British Leyland fail?

With you on that Ramone, its easy to blame the unions for this and that but it was more down to crap management.

obviously some people given an inch will take a yard and obviously Leyland were giving more than an inch ,it should have been stamped on early doors and someone made an example of i watched the documentary by Clarkson and the union man and the manager were laughing about cars that were sent out with parts missing, but the designers , and top management were the real villains with what they were churning out and how they let things slide

I think it was the same programme; didn’t Clarkson ask how you were meant to build a decent vehicle with one hand in the air? I’ve read in a classic mag, that some top bod ended AEC in '79 as he was refused an apprenticeship there, and got one with Leyland instead?

The merger should never have happened ,Leyland had the upper hand from day ,1 they should have stayed independant and maybe 1 of them would have survived

Do you mean that Leyland had better products than AEC pre merger?
And if so, which ones in particular.

No i think they were both good in their time with AEC being the slightly better of the 2 .What ive read about them is it was always a case of us and them never working together this mainly instigated by Leyland. With what both groups had at their disposal did they really need to merge.AEC always had a great reputation until the late 60s then everything seemed to slide, mainly due to a lack of funds and co operation

Fair enough, I thought you were saying Leyland had better trucks than AEC.

From everything I’ve read or heard or anyone I’ve talked to they all say the same thing Leyland ruined it completely

Trouble was the trucks were proppong up the bus and car division

AEC were a very well respected company before the merger and had some good projects in development until Leyland put a stop to them

I wonder why Paccar never looked at what they had in the Leyland group when they took over.Maybe they could have redesigned the AV760 or the V8 most people said that the V8 had real promise

Yeah but they had a 13.1 litre V8 they could have developed or even a 12.47,look what they did with the Leyland block and that was 11.6 i think
