Why are truck drivers paid very poorly

Yes way. What exactly is your problem?

Bit worried about him , gone awol , hope the reality of weekends away , 45 hrs at lym whilst we pull a few palls round the country for the same money has got him sat in some corner screaming ha ha

TBH after 25 years on here I dont post that much anymore,I tend to read and lurk  this place hasnt been my responsibility for over two years  however as for me screaming- yes I do do multiple weeks away, and some times weekended in not the best place, but the actual hours I work are far less than 70 , very often its as low as two to three hours in a day, most weeks have days, quite often 3-4 days, completely off to go explore the local towns/pubs  Even if we have to travel distance due to embargoes, if we are passing major cities effectively our working day is 9.30 am - 3,30 pm, once in a while we have to do a bit, since Xmas I have only gone over a 13 hour day 4 times and gone over 9 hours drive twice. Having for many years done multiple weeks away first on Euro work then on road planers, its some thing I am used to and comfortable with. horses for courses mate, I dont mind being weekended and getting paid to go out/to the pub, its not for you and that I understand. I will take a30-50 max hour week not rushed or pushed over a 70+ hour week and got to make that RDC booking - even if it does mean occasionally getting weekended in Lymm  ( ps last week was a 45 at Tebay, cracking little pub and social club in the village)

Whatever dozy did or didn’t do for that there is one thing that jumped out at me - all that money and pension contribution of just £33 :open_mouth:

That is awful and I’m constantly amazed at how people neglect things like pension and discard it or overlook it as part of an overall package.

Nah, dozy is ok for pension. He’s told us s here loads a times, that he’s got a big pension, Mrs got a big pension, house paid off, etc…

And still he works like a chump, midnight starts, 60+ hours a week .

Its tricky tho - if you expect to put half a million into a pension then ok - otherwise if you just have 100 grand it disqualifies you from pension credit and you will get less than if you had saved nothing

Going in a different direction, I was brought up with the old-fashioned working class mentality that you never talked about how much you earned

I remember as a young engineering apprentice (in 1978) a conversation between the older guys and we younger ones about money (we got £25 a week at 16, going up to £35 at 17  )
One of my mates asked one of the older guys how much he took home, his reply went something like:
“Never ask a man how much he earns kiddo, decent blokes will see it as cheek and tell you to [zb] off, anyone who does tell you will be telling you a pack of lies.”

Was he the bosses pet? Its bad thinking - the boss can pay you whatever he likes if you domt know what amyone gets - a real man would let you know.

If you mean this week I’ve done 42 hrs upto now ( 3 days ) , today is looking like 13/14 hrs ( luckily I’ve a split rest to use ) , then thurs / sat is anyone’s guess , maybe bloke who dishes out work will be nice & give me 2 x 12 hrs shifts , no idea…

This is crazy. You do as many hours in three days as it would take me six days to put in and then think yourself lucky that a split rest will permit you to max out or thereabouts again. After that you hope that the bloke on the desk will give you another two 12-hour days to finish the week.

It’s a job, Doze, not an endurance test.

Because there’s chump who will work those silly hours the planners expect all to do them
The reduced rest is for the drivers benefit not the planners to get an extra 6 hours work out of you !
What happens if you do all your 15’s in the 1st 3 days and can’t get a split on the last only 2 1/2 hr
You’re running in the next day :unamused:

We have the chumps who bang in 3x15 Mon, Tues,.and Wed (not told to btw).then complain to anybody unfortunate enough to have to listen when they can’t get back home for the weekend on a Fri because they have used all their 10s,.and have to run in Sat morning.

Then when they get back in, they get their run for Mon allocated, which will be a minmum weekend rest/stupid o clock.start,.so they say absolutely nothing to the boss who has give them it,. but instead then go around everybody left in the yard complaining about it…■■■■ knob heads who deserve all they get imo.
