Was it Carryfast or Sploom who wanted to know how to drive a manual?
This might help.

Great box, much better and imo easier than the twin splitter.
My mate converted 2 of my trucks in the 80s from 13 spd to 18 spd, both ■■■■■■■ one ERF and a Seddon Atk…it made a world of difference and I loved them …at the time.
Would not like to trade in my auto today though, anything for an easy life for me nowadays with nothing to prove…
Only bad point with todays autos though the dumbing down results where you can now teach a chimp how to drive a truck, resulting in the number of chimps with class 1s today (amongst the good new drivers of course thankfully) who would have never got through the net in those days.
One of the very few ambitions I still have in this job (one ) is to have a go in an old style US conventional KW or PB , if it had an 18 spd Fulller, it would be a bonus,.and interesting for me to find out if I can still make them sing.
Looks like I ain’t grown up yet after all eh …just as I am always told.
Just to say there was nothing magic about mastering these boxes, just because lads are not taught to use them these days, does not say they could easily learn if they had to…as I said still.a lot of good proper drivers amongst the chimps.
(Arse covered for usual flak I reck. )
Wasn’t me.
Don’t see the big difference between the 16 speed Ecosplit v 18 speed Fuller.
The latter is just the 13 speed with splitter on the low range not just high range.
I’ve also pointed out the glaring contradiction in synchro v constant mesh numerous times.Either way you still need to match engine and road speeds to at least match the clutch faces on synchro boxes and I’ve never driven a synchro box that didn’t work better by double de clutching shifts just like a constant mesh box anyway. That includes the Volvo, Scania and Ecosplit and Merc offerings.
I also agree with the factory floating shifts isn’t the correct way to use a constant mesh box.
As for Sploom, like most, I doubt if he’d know the difference between double de clutched sequential downshifts on the approach to a roundabout v just brake and de clutch it and then use the synchro to jam it into whichever gear he guesses that it might be able to move off in on arrival and then just re engage the clutch against the idling engine.
Apologies to him if I’m wrong.

Ironically the 18 speed Fuller is still a default choice in new and recent trucks for numerous operators in most of the English speaking world.

True, but is it 5e default choice in the Chinese speaking world of the future?
There you go SDU that’s how to drive a truck doesn’t really matter if it’s synchro or constant mesh, or range change, or range change and splitter.
I also drive my car just the same way.

No, you wouldn’t see the difference. You’ve never seen an 18 speed.

Well I can’t be arsed to argue with him, but I’ve yet to see a municipal vehicle, the likes of a road sweeper with an 18 speed Fuller, but there ya go eh?
at the risk of being called stupid was each type of gearbox the same ratios so once you learnt the appropriate engine speed and road speed for a particular gear you could apply that knowledge to a different box

I’m hearing you, Rob, but lack of knowledge and experience has never held him back in projecting himself as the ultimate expert.

Not stupid at all Cooper. None of us was born with knowledge or experience (Carryfast will contradict me), we gained it by asking, watching and trying.
Have a look at the ratios in the below link, most ratios are just under 20% difference.
It wasnt me,like I said ,I dont have anything to prove when it comes to this subject. It will all be autos from now on so it’s all by the by

4 over 4 range change and a splitter on all 8 which ‘big’ difference have I missed.
Thanks for your “expert” insight Carryfast, but the reality is that you’ve driven niether.

I’ve had a couple of F90 MAN eight wheelers fitted with 13 speed Fullers-best gearbox I’ve ever had .the 18 speed would be perfect .never driven anything with a twin splitter unfortunately
I’ve got a new Scania now, with an auto, I really really wanted a 12 speed manual, but we had to take what was available (the alternative was an auto Daf so a no brainer) the Scania auto is very good, would I swap it for a 12 speed Scania manual? I’d have to think very hard about it.
Would I swap it if there was an option for a Fuller 13 or 18 speed? Absolutely I would!!

I have never understood that type of mindset.
Speaking as somebody who used to love the Fuller as a gearbox ,…
Would I ■■■■ like to go back to it today when I have the far easier option of an auti box…
Same principle as I used to love my old Mini 1000 as a kid, but there is no way I’d have the same car today.
I liked my old manual truck. Nowadays I just like my auto box. I would have a shattered left leg with the amount I spend on the M6
