Who makes the best tippers

DAF CF with a double drive and a manual box, Never had any issues with traction, compared to the Volvo’s if it works alongside seem to be able to dig themselves into tarmac sometimes.

I think CFs are good for the more relaxed drivers and operators. I temp’d for MA Gibson of Woodstock last December. They have an 09 reg 8w with the 8speed and the 360 engine. They also have an 02 reg 6w with 8speed and the 310 engine. I was amazed by the 6wheeler, comfortable, went well and carried about 16200. It’s been no trouble and apparently nor has the 8wheeler. The thing is they wont rag their lorries, do mostly there own work so not chasing loads at £ silly per load or tonne and stay local.
The firm I delivered flour for run CFs and they are the biggest heaps of junk out. Then again the drivers are on job and knock doing 60hours per week…

aka an owner driver who understands mechanical sympthay and the fact that if the trucks off the road, it isn’t earning.

We had an FL10 prior and it was a heap of junk, Leyland Constructor before that was faultless hence the move to DAF this time (nearest we could get), now it’s not been faultless, but it’s been pretty top notch apart from routine stuff.

the 06 340 cf i had from new for five years and it was run very hard ,400 000 kms,and nearly 4000 hrs on the engine powering the crane/grab.only issues were an alternator and a turbo in all that time.
that lorry earnt the firm that owned it(and me!) a lot of money!
daf went downhill abit in my opinion with the euro 5 versions

Can agree there too, ours is an '05 CF340, 12.6 engine.

For Myself, I’d have nothing but a volvo, after 3 FL10’s and 2 FM’s I can’t fault them, they do give stupid warning electrical fault troubles but I have never been left on the side of the road.
If I had to buy for a driver? He’d get a Hino, Strong and Cheap and easy to work on. No matter what you buy a driver he’ll find fault with it, so just buy the strongest and cheapest on the market!

and the worst on fuel -smart move :sunglasses:
also the horrendous price (and availability) of spares-£1500 for an alternator…

True, they are a pig on Juice, but put a donkey in a volvo or a scania and he’ll will be in the same league as a hino in Fuel returns. As for £1500 for an alternator? Where are you buying your sapres? :open_mouth: And as for the OP’s question, who makes the best tippers? No point in spouting about Fodens and leylands as they are now a thing of the past.

You might aswell say Hinos are a thing of the past; I haven’t seen a new one in a few years.

the alternator came from norfolk trucks in enfield-i dont own it,just the poor sod that has to drive it!!
one of our other drivers is off for a week so ive been using his 11 plate daf -it really makes you realise how bad the hino’s are when you drive something half decent again lol.

i wish my one was a thing of the past!!! if it got stolen i’d be delighted lol

Curious someone saying Volvo FMX were dear, a couple or years ago an 8x2 FMX was about £12K cheaper than a boggo standard P cab of similar specs.

What’s the Scania 360 like? I spoke to one local operator who hated them and have now gone to 400’s but another local one who has run Fodens for years and lately put a few Iveco on the road has just got two 63 P360’s

We run mostly P360s with manual 'boxes. The drivers like them. None came off them to drive one of the 63 reg MAN autos…

I drive a 360 8x4 scania it pull s better than the p380 it replaced there quite good on juice to

when i first had an i-shift fmx i really didnt like the auto box, soon grew on me though.although its off road capabilities were not all that-perhaps that makes it a fail in the “who makes the best tippers” thread lol

When we were looking to buy a new 8x2 chassis (for a beavertail not a tipper) their price was so high for a G400 so they countered with another offer for a P360 saying it was the best thing since sliced bread. I wasn’t exactly convinced it would be the thing for us and tried to swing it towards an FMX. We never did order a new one as we turned up my current R420 but when I went to the local operator to deliver some plant they were very interested in my truck and said they were disappointed with the 360’s which were lame compared to their old 380’s they have since started getting 400’s now.

I did wonder if they were missing something as most new tippers seem to be P360’s around Essex.

Our firm runs 1 10 reg P360 fitted with a Wilcox body & the driver loves it, the fleet is mainly Scanias now with also 2 07/08 reg 380s as well as 2 13 400s one which is mine and have to say I’m glad I’ve got the extra 20bhp over a 380 and it helps on the steep roads.

The P360 was bought used about 3 months ago & the previous owner spec’d quite a few options like heated seats, button on steering wheel next to CC which keeps Wagon at same speed when going downhill & also the endurance brake I think? Has a stalk on the right hand side which none of the other Scanias have.

Also someone mentioned not seeing new Hinos? The firm bought one new in March this year & there is one haulage firm in Leeds who run exclusively Hino tippers in Green & Yellow colours & recently bought 10 in March.

So some firms are buying new Hinos as they don’t like the price increase that came with Euro 6.

I have the retarder which is good and the downhill button that I never use . I’m sure heated seats used to be standard though, this one is the first Scania I’ve driven that hasn’t had them.

My 400 doesn’t have heated seats nor the retarder. Happy that the dealer we ordered it new from ripped the standard stereo out & fitted a Bluetooth one with USB so I can play my iPhone, happy days! Also the dash is clean lines now with the reversing camera screen built within the dash & also the weigher is within the screen n all.

I always always ensure my cab is clean after all it is your office everyday & I wanna be able to put my sandwich down & pick it back up without it having a layer of dust attached to it lol!

Do you have polish (as in Mr Sheen, not cheap agency drivers) provided? We don’t so it’s an old rag around when it gets to the stage where I can write my days’ work in the dust. I’ve no mats, brush etc so I’m lucky there isn’t more dirt on the cab floor than there already is, but I will put a hose into the footwell once in a while. No screenwash provided either, I put a drop of fairy liquid in a 4pt milk bottle and top up with water.
The sister truck to mine is immaculate. It’s the original driver on it (one of the Steelboys) and his cab floor is so clean you could eat your dinner off it. He has a few bits of bling in his which look nice, but I just don’t have the interest in mine.
I think if both lorries caught fire, he’d empty his flask on it, I’d find a nice place to sit and open mine.

I understand but I buy the cleaning stuff myself because I’ve been given my own truck & I take pride in a clean truck it’s one of those things innit?

bet you wished you’d plumped for the scania you got offered instead eh? that would have been my choice any day!

i really dont mind paying for a bit of polish/airfreshner etc and all of my previous lorries have been like new inside, however i really cant be bothered to clean the hino at all because i hate driving it so much(but this job is handy for me as i only have a two mile commute,so for the time being i’m quite prepared to put up with it,getting decent money and being home at four o’clock every day!!) -we only have two eight wheel grabs so not much chance of getting a different motor, and no chance of them buying a new one lol

I had pride at Smiths in my early Fodens as I’d grown up knowing how strict they used to be.
I looked after the Alpha because I’d had it new and was the regular driver for over 7 years. Then discovered nobody gave a rats’ ■■■■* and that’s how I’ve been since. Not saying I’ll always have this mindset but I see no reason to change at the moment.
Andrew S, no no regrets really for the reason given above, except I’d be earning more fuel bonus with a Scania!
*Except I do get a bit annoyed seeing how it looks now.

at least a scania interior wont self destruct
how much is the fuel “bonus” worth? is it even worth bothering with? you dont seem too fussed so i’ll guess not!!
