Got back down as far as Stainmore Cafe on the A66 (cracking little stop, btw…use it or lose it folks - even tight-wad cab-cookers like me buy a couple of cans of coke in there 'cos he doesn’t charge for parking…therefore you can’t complain about the potholes which rival Birtley N/Owl in depth!), :

Lucy you’ve made an old man very happy. Is Stainmore really open again? Surely not the original building which was completely derelict and falling down last time I was there (about 6 years ago). I have many happy memories of that place. It was an oasis of warmth in bleak winters long ago before heaters and sleepers.
Stories abounded as to why it went under, being in such a good spot and not bypassed by the new road. One was that there was no mains water, only a well and the authorities condemned it. Another, and this goes back a few years, that one owner wanted to build accommodation for drivers but was refused planning, it being in a conservation area. I thought it would revive when they built the pumps, in those days it was a big changeover point for Stirland’s of Nottingham with Smith of Maddiston, on the Boots contract.

BTW, talking of the Boots job. I didn’t mind rolling my Borderer up there for the swap each night and then back home, but one day they said ‘you’re on the through run tomorrow’. This was a straight through run to Glasgow with an LAD Albion, sleep in digs during the day while a shunter sorted the trailer, and back the next night. An Atki man wheeling an Albion? Not likely! Managed to get out of it though, good move, I had a day job driving a limmo for my mate, the funeral director!

Going up to Kirkby Lonsdale/Sedburgh for my son’s wedding in May. Wonder if I could manage a little detour for old times sake…?

Salut, David.

Quick reply, got to go to work…

Yep, it’s Interbobbin - there aren’t many other places in Alva big enough to take a container are there?
We do it pretty regularly…but they’re not called Interbobbin now, they were taken over a month or two ago - gave the first of our lads to get paperwork for it after the change a right shock, late on on a Friday with not enough time to go searching for a “new” place and get home!!!
On the plus-side, they tip 24/7 now, and seem to be a bit more reliable about the speed with which they’ll do it. :grimacing:

Spardo - Stainmore is open once more, and it’s in the little square building in the middle of the carpark…it’s been re-opened just long enough to have had chance to get tatty, and hasn’t, which is a very good sign.
Apparently the guy running it is the old owner of the Quernhow Cafe on the A1, he sold the bigger place to re-open Stainmore.

but they’re not called Interbobbin now,

right then what r they called now  don’t keep it a secret lucy

did you have a containership curtainsider on today and go east bound on the M8 lucy  i saw it today as i was sat on the on ramp j6 newhouse waiting for recovery truck,i thought i wonder if that was you.

Lucy,
That sounds like the shop they built to accompany the pumps. Sounds cosy. I suppose the old building is completely history by now then?
Good news nonetheless, thanks for the info.

Salut, David.

Kitkat - Nope, I’m banned from curtainsiders at the moment (H&S overkill)
I did go west on the M8 about 4pm though…it was one of Alva’s slow days (the skinny guy with the glasses…it’s a pain when you catch his shift).
As for their new name…I’m afraid I’ve forgotten again already…although I think it begins with a “B”…

Spardo - The old cafe is very much still there…but it’s been converted into a house.
