Seems to have got a lot worse in the last 5yrs or so.
I’ve recently taken to doing the same as the o.p. When I first got my cat.C I was obviously taught to take both lanes if I felt I needed to, that’s how I’ve been doing it since and when I’ll be using the outside lane I stick to it religiously so a car can get up the right hand side of me if needs be - but they make such a pigs ear of it or start off on your right and as you both set off they cut across into your lane about four inches off the front o/s corner (quite scarey if you were moving and they had to set off) - so, I now straddle the lanes if I need to AND if it looks a bit tight - Tough ■■■ 
Get a few funny looks off fellow hgv drivers as they think to themselves “he didn’t need to do that, plenty of space - idiot” but I don’t care, it makes life lots easier 
Why is there so much variation in the lanes coming up to roundabouts? it always used to be; left for left or straight on, right for right or anything else (and straight on if dual carriageway) but now they’re all over the place, often with no signs to tell you which goes where other than lane markings 25yds from the roundabout where it’s too late

Highways Department has decided to Narrow the lanes on the A1 from Angel of the North through to 1st Exit after QE Bridge A69 to make the Dual Carriageway into 3 lanes with 50 mph Speed Limit.
Now that is going to be very interesting to see how cars manage to pass trucks

Perhaps a mandatory retest every 5 or 10 years might help ?I’m surprised no one has come up with this. It would, after all, be another money making venture to keep some more worthless beaureacrats employed!
The Party in power who introduced this would lose the next election - most people have cars and they are the voters !!
We sit back and let them screw us on road tax prices and fuel duty so I don’t see why this would be any different.
We had a major victory over the Council Numpty in Worcester. They altered the lanes at the Sainsbury’s island in Redditch so that there was only one for the straight on traffic which is where most of it goes. This caused tremendous queues where none had existed before.
There was such an outcry that they came back and put it right.
