Which lane after Dartford bridge?

Normally I don’t have a problem with choosing a lane somewhere and occasionally I do get it wrong if it’s not clearly marked or I simply mess up.

However, I have reason to go over the bridge at Dartford now and again and last week I was treated to a barrage of horn blaring and hand shaking gestures from someone in a car :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Right then…i’d gone over the bridge and had paid at the toll (£2.90 :unamused: ) and was in lane 3 of 4 or 5? with my intention to go onto the M20 thereby after the A2/M2 turn off I would be in lane 1 of the M25 if you can understand that

Somewhere between the first turn off and the A2 split a car passed that wasn’t too happy with me and pointed to the left :unamused: I blasted my own horn and flashed lights at him and saluted   again he pointed to the left in such a way which I took that I should be in a lane in that direction.

I didn’t think too much about it straight away but then I thought hang on where should I really be :unamused: :unamused:

I had about 20 tonne on the back so I wasn’t particlarly slow or fast but was making good progress, or so I thought.

Question is…which lane do the majority of you lot use going that way - or is this just a free for all bit of road :unamused: :unamused:

there are 4 lanes on that stretch the two near side bear left for the a2 as you said so lane three and four is for the m25 which will lead to the m20 ,so when you come through the toll build up speed in,close your eyes and go for the lane you want :open_mouth: it can be a freeforall here…it seems like the car driver got confused not you

I try and get into lane 2 from the booths when heading for the m20 until im up to speed. That way traffic using the a2 can "undertake" me and faster stuff can overtake. However, id have ignored him or maybe blown a kiss… they like that

wether its right or not i dont know, but i do the same as
you did m8. not a good idea to wait til last minute to change
cos our friends the car drivers wont let you across.

hi jb the kiss is a top idea
ive always just waved like the queen and smiled
ill try the kiss net time

If you’ve got Tax in the window, you’ve every right to choose whichever lane you want, (excepting the outside lane, for legal reasons) so stuff 'em!

Just about says it all

Except that on that particular stretch of motorway, you can use the outside lane as it is still technically an A road. The end of motorway regulations signs are situated just after J30 and the motorway regulations don’t apply again until after the A2 junction. So other than when crossing the bridge, where there is a width restriction on lanes 3 & 4, you can use the outside lane between these two points.

Same here, you need to be getting across quite early or you’ll end up trying to dodge fast moving cars going down the A2. The Driver was one of them “I hate truckers” vigilanties you seem to get everywhere. Most have no idea, having never driven anything larger than a transit van.
Instead of blowing horns and flashing lights, you could try the New Age method, That is to bless them on the principle that maybe some of the Karma might return to you, or try the Voodoo method and stick pins in an doll of a car driver hanging from your window.

stright across to lane 3 no messing about . your on the outskirts of london and its everyman for himself. its when your on the bridge you get the problem when you have to get in lane 1 and 2 from what was the middle lane of the m25 :smiling_imp: .

or you just come off at the a13 head for lakeside and come back up the bridge

Are you allowed to use the outside lane on dual carriange ways of more than 2 lanes then?

With that one it is just a case of being ultra observant and look out for idiots. Going up last week i had some idiot in a german registered artic decide he was going to cut across 3 lanes of traffic and push me out of the way so he could use the right hand tunnel, i actually had to stop at the entrance to the tunnel slip, still only inches in it! :unamused:

Car drivers do annoy us from time to time…but i dont think its the right attitude
to say stuff em…maybe you were in the wrong…but even if you were right and the car driver was a bit frustrated…just take it in your stride…and enjoy the music.

What i do when i have left the Extorsion booths…is i always line myself up with the nearside lane, after the erith turn…then if i am going in the direction of the M25/M20…i keep the indicator going whilst moving over to the next lane…then…do the same again…until i am in what is known as the nearside lane of the M25/M20…
Both lanes are clearly marked…two in blue for the motorway… and two in green for the A2…there should be no confusion…but there are times when its an absolute nightmare because no one wants to give way and let you change lanes…but as was said earlier…dont leave changing lanes until the last minute…thats asking for trouble…

I always go into lane 3 when i have enough speed up,or unless im going down the A2

can you imagine the carnage if they wearnt there though! :open_mouth:

do what i do and go into london mode move, signal, mirror, and any lane till its time then wey hey wot ever lane you choose it`s the wrong one regardless somebody will always peeeeeeeeeep you.

I always get over to the nearside as soon as possible because I always take the first exit for the old A2 (A296) which takes you down past the Treasure Chest café. Still easy to make a mistake though because if I get across too soon I end up in a filter lane which merges back into lane 1   .
Dodgy part of the world :frowning: .

Salut, David.

Lane 3 as soon as I get through the tolls, leave it any later when its busy and repmobile just will not let you get over without an argument. In fact I start making the move right as I come over the bridge by taking lane 3 on the run down to the tolls (width limit no longer applies after the brow of the bridge), then take the right most any vehicle booth.

dont worry about it. they all think they are gods gift to driving down there.in fact they think that about everything.

I start to move over to lane 3 of 4 as soon as i have dodged all the suicide pilots coming out of the toll booths. remember there are are at least 10 lines of traffic trying to get into 4 lanes.

Left hand 2 lanes are for Canterbury / A2 and the outer 2lanes lead you to the M25/ M20.

What exemption disc do i need on the actual bridge though that allows fully laden artics to use the 2 outer lanes on the bridge. The lanes with the 7.5 tonne limit■■?

I think it’s called an Irish Tax disk.

Technically there are 5 lanes after the toll booths, the far left one heads off for local traffic, for the business park, Dartford Etc, then the next two are A2 last two M25/M20
