Which CSCS card to get?

I’ve seen a couple of agency adverts stating that a CSCS card is required (delivering to construction sites) - but they don’t specify which type of card.
Is there a general “I’m just delivering the kit and not planning on operating it” card, or do you need specific cards to be able to carry/deliver specific items?
I’m already planning on getting an EPIC/MPQC card (if I can find a trainer locally) to make myself more employable.

As a follow up question: If I do the required training does it only count towards my CPC hours if it’s a driving related card?

It’s probably the H&S touch screen test that they are on about, it is the starting point for all CSCS and CPCS cards. In theory everyone on a site should have one although they only issuea certificate and not a card.

It could be a CPCS card which is the plant operator card and there are different categories for everything, realistically the only one that it may be would be one of the lorry loader category (HIAB) This is a lengthy and costly thing to achieve.

I deliver and collect justabout every conceivable piece of plant from sites across London and th South East, I have a lorry loader card which has never been asked for, but I hold no cards for other plant. If I needed a card for every different item I would constantly be on a training course and would never get any work done. There is a loader securer card (2 actually - STGO and non STGO) which proves that you have an understanding of how to operate general plant items in a basic manner to enable the loading onto a vehicle and transport of item, It is a blanket category which would allow you to move rather than operate anything. Again this would be time consuming and costly.

Lastly there is no legal requirement to hold any of these cards or qualifications, only that you are tained and competent on the plant that you are operating. However some sites will insist on the cards before you can work.

As a driver collecting and delivering you seem to slip under the radar as you are not actually working on the site, no inductions or checks.

Seek some clarification from the agency befre spending any money.

I’ve only done a bit of plant on and off sites and have never been asked for any sort of qualification, the agency has mentioned it but it always turned out the job was more important than the bit of paper.

You’re better off jut getting someone to show you how a few bits of plant work than one of these silly touchscreen multiple choice tests. Be of far more use to you!

It’s an introduction to my world, if it doesn’t scare you to death or you don’t mind getting your hands dirty then this little guide I made might explain a few things. Maybe one day something you read on there will come in useful.

Thanks for the tips.

Thanks for the links…no worries about getting my hands dirty and some of that kit looks fun!

It will probably just be the basic 'site operative’card with green stripe that you get from doing cscs touch screen test, test should cost £17.50,don’t fall for some adverts that claim they can get you a quick test and charge £40/50,this is the basic requirement on any of the Major Contractors Group sites, check out Construction Skills website, tests usually held same place as driving test theory,or in a wagon that goes round the country, very easy basic health n safety.

When I was doing plant I never got asked for them either. All they seem to care about is that you have a hi-viz and a hard hat and you’re done. Even though my experience of driving 360s was approximately 10 mins total time and no qualifications to drive them, I always drove them on and off the trailer as the so-called experienced drivers who’d done all the tests could never get them up/down the ramp without them pirouetting round and nearly losing them off the side. :open_mouth: Just another box-ticking & arse-covering exercise, that’s all it is.
