Where to fill up?

Hello everybody simple question here I have not long passed my class 2 licence and have since had a few agency jobs mostly in vans with the odd few days out in a class 2 however I start a full time job in a class 2 tomorrow and need putting right on something.

I have had to fill up the van many times there is obviously no confusion there however on my days out on the class two I never had to fill up.

my question is do you have to use HGV specific filling stations such as at motorway service stations or is it a case of if you can fit it under the forecourt you can fill up there ?

Another one of my most basic of basic questions but there you go any help would be most appreciated the sooner the better please

Perfectly sensible question. Your employer may give you instructions on where/how to fill up. They may even have their own bulk tank in the yard.

If there are no specific instructions, then the answer is to “use your loaf”. If it will sensibly fit (and watch the canopy height) then fill up anywhere. M’ways are very easy but at a price. Some supermarkets have very good access for large vehicles (I use our local Asda all the time). Don’t squeeze in to a small forecourt. That’s where the bumps and scrapes happen - so dont put yourself there to start with!

Some of your choices will be governed by payment method. Your employer may give you a fuel card that can only be used at certain places. He should have a directory to give you of places you can use the card. But a company credit card can be used anywhere.

Your boss will be pleased with you if you save 3 or 4 p a litre by filling up at a supermarket - - - but not if you do a couple of hundred quids worth of damage whilst you’re in there!

Ask other drivers on the same firm what they do if in doubt.

All the best - - - and well done on getting a start. Pete

thank you very much peter this has cleared things up for me and reminded me they do actually have a pump at the yard so i should not have to worry for now

When you fill up, make sure you check what diesel you’re putting in. Don’t just grab the first one that says diesel on it, don’t think the bossess will be too happy with spending an extra 20-30p a liter on fuel. (Shell VPower Nitro+ and each stations equivalent)

Nearly made that mistake myself.

Well done on getting a full time job got to too be better than ad hoc agency work  ,where are you working if you don’t mind me asking as I seem to remember your from my area
We have a pump in our yard , always check the truck gauge before leaving the yard , ESP if you drive a few different ones ( not everyone fills up after returning to the yard )
Cheers Mike

i take it you will be using fuel cards in wich case your restricted to the fuel stations you can use we use key fuels and there is a free download for it you can set it to show hgv sites too its come in handy a few times too
ask the office they may have a preferance possibly a pump in the yard
good luck with the job too

Never let a wagon get under 1/4 tank of diesel (especially one you don’t know) I had a Scania once, let it go under 1/4 but not on red, & it ran out  Faulty Gauge/set wrong.
If it’s showing under 1/4, have a look in the tank, just to make sure there’s some ‘go go’ juice in it !
& don’t run out of Adblu either, can drop the power/torque by 60%, so it’s really slow & it’s illegal.(because you will be ‘Exeeding Maximum Emissions’)

Yea your right about the Adblu Martin , I drove , one of our tippers just the once and the dash display was showing exhaust fault ( ie ad blue problem) . It drove ok full power etc , the regular driver was most surprised when a day or two later it went into limp mode :unamused:
Cheers Mike

Remember the tail swing on your Class 2 ,you could so easily swipe the fuel pump or the hose could get fouled up with the bars or bumper thing that your lights are mounted on.Use the fuel in the yard as much as possible as its bought wholesale rather than retail.

Seems to be the fashion for supermarkets not to have a height notice on their canopies these days. Saw a near miss at the new Sainsburys in Carlisle other day and it’s about 12’ 6" I think, with no sign.
