Food is one thing you will dearly miss about the UK. Its just the usual American garbage out here. No fish and chips, no kebabs, no proper roast dinners, no gravy. I think its a case of our unhealthy food being better than their unhealthy food!

Best get used to burgers and steak

Last night we had roast pork with all the trimmings and proper gravy, which by the way, does not come out of a packet, no matter where in the world you live :open_mouth:

Eating out is a different story though, especially in truckstops, in those the food is nasty. I eat in the cab, mostly food I prepare at home and take with me to go in the microwave, I do eat out, but I do it properly and go into a decent resturaunt or curry house and have a really good feed, itā€™s expensive though, usually around $25 a time, so I donā€™t do it every day

Iā€™ve done a man v food challenge at a truckstop in Montana, it was a 32oz Bison Burger and fries, I licked the pattern off the plate, got my picture taken and a free t-shirt (which they had run out of)

We found decent food Stateside, not all fried muck. BTW: good fish and chips in Chilliwack opp the Husky.

i used a lunchbox cooker on a cig lighter socketā€¦it took a normal sized chinnese carryout container and my OH made up meals eg stew ā€¦corned beef hash and even soup. a couple o hrs before ya stopped plug ere in and voilla a warm meal .ended up wi 2 cookers lol 1 for main other for apple crumble etc.
In winter kept them on catwalk in a box ,summer carried a cooler.
A bit different being on a milk run/peddle run than being on distance as i was on retail deliveries usualy open (6amā€”6pm.) unless i had a key , so i liked to get to next delivery and parked up at stores and not truckstops 90% o the time.
yup mick thats a good chippy ā€¦

Until you hit an American pot-hole or God forbid, a Massechussettes bridge joint and then the front axle would need replacing.

For the life of me I canā€™t figure out why MA and other states resurface everything but the damm bridges ? itā€™s so riddiculous, what visiting tourists must think is beyond me ?

I have found some places where fish and chips is better than in England, Piccadilly pub on rt US20 Auburn MA has amazing Haddock and Chips.
Rancheroā€™s on US9 in South Glens Falls NY has extremely good Haddock and chips and in Brooklyn NY there is Park Slope chip shop, run by British people they even do local deliveries in a Purple Reliant regal van.

theres a pretty decent Chippy in Edmonton, was opened up by an expat. (they sell battered mars bars ā€¦ mmm)

Brits Fish & Chips
6940 77 street NW

and also
11603 104 ave nw

Still to find an indian restaurant that serves the English recipes. Korma here compared to back homeā€¦ Id love a proper balti too ā€¦

and dont get me started on bacon. Have to get proper bacon from the farmers market from another expat

theres a chippy of sort up on the west side of lethbridge can get decent looking bangers bacon and proper baked beans in there but costs and arm and leg

We can get proper fish and chips , and also have an English tea room in the city where we can purchase Melton Mowbrey pork pies , Colemans mustard , and Heinz beans .

Walmart in Sherwood park have a good selection of imported british foods at very reasonable prices.
Beanz, Heinz Soups, Cadburys, Mustard, Biscuits etc.

I hear its a trial for stores near where there are higher concentrations of british expats. Sherwood park has a lot of us living there.

Failing that, theres the Import store on Gateway Blvd just south of Whyte ave, Called Brit Foods and stocks a lot of food items, Meat is a no-no as it cant be imported.

Theres also the Import store in West Ed Mall, its a smaller store, with higher prices, and less stock. Seems to specialise in Scottish more than anything, probably due to the owner being scottish.

And then we have Candy Bouqet in St Albert, who stocks a good selection of imported stuff aswell as traditional sweets sold by the 100g

Bulk Barn - They stock some chocolates and sometimes some other british food too.

Have any of you took a liking to any of the sports basketball baseball ? Football(rugby) lol

they play rugby in the summer over here didnt get much time last year as only just got here baseballā– ā– ? would rather watch paint dry and taking a liking to hockey its fast action packed with a few fights thrown in. like rugby but on ice with sticks and blades lol

Morning campers  May long weekend is Rugbyfest in Edmonton if anyone is interested .

I wouldnā€™t mind watching a few hockey matches like would be good fun lol, I donā€™t like rugby but I watched the superbowl to see what all the hype was about, best thing I thought was the atmosphere and the lengths they goto to make it what it is, has anyone been to a ā€˜majorā€™ sporting event over there? got any pictures you donā€™t mind sharing , cheers

Ice hockey aint a bad night out

Come on Kev, spill the beans, youā€™ve just gone back to England so you have a different perspective to the rest of us, letā€™s get both sides accross to get a balanced view

The job side of things you will work harder and longer hours than in the UK but in a lot of ways itā€™s easier. I supouse that depends where you work though but at flying eagle you was pretty much left to do as you please as long as you got the job done which suited me.
I found it hard been away on my own but unlike yourself and a few of the others Iā€™d never been away from home with the job so it was totally alien on top of learning the job but on the whole I enjoyed it.
As for living in Canada I loved the place. Steinbach is a great little town especially to bring up a family and Iā€™m sure there are many more round Canada like it.
Perhaps if my personal situation was different I would still be there building a future.
In a way I have a better life in England as I have a job that is Monday to Friday and fairly set hours and a decent wage so I can make plans round this and and have weekends to myself wheras the OTR job in Canada doesnā€™t but then again thereā€™s plenty of British jobs like this.
Depending on yourself I must say I realy missed my family.
I know thereā€™s problems in the UK but Iā€™m on my own and have no kids so I donā€™t have the worrys family guys face with schools gangs etc.
Iā€™d go back to Canada again and give it a shot once I sort all my personal life out. But I donā€™t think Iā€™d stay doing OTR for long but thatā€™s just personal preference.
I supouse the other thing is what you told me and I saw is the case especially if you sell a property in the UK is donā€™t fall in to the big house new car quads and all the other toys and then struggle to pay for it as although you can probaly afford a better house than you could in the UK especially if your from our part of England it all needs paying for.
If you make the move and your married you have to both in it 100% as it will break you if your not. And if your relationship isnā€™t 100% it will break it.
Thereā€™s no right or wrong answer it depends on your own situation but for now England suits me better as I have a lot going on but Iā€™d give it another go but have everything in order this time

Iā€™ve been to about 3 Oilers Games in Edmonton in the last 3 years when Iā€™ve been visiting the family out there. Twice Iā€™ve been in a private box belonging to my youngest sons boss. It was great entertainment but nothing like watching a game on the TV. For a start there is no commentary to tell you whats happening. The action is very quick and interspersed with lots of breaks so the adverts can be fitted in on the TV. During the TV advert gaps, there are various competitions and goodie handouts going on. Play will resume without any warning so is easy to miss if you are busy stuffing your face at the back of the box. Some people were watching the game and listening to radio commentary on a transister radio with an earpeice. Before the game started I found it rather amusing that when the American Anthem " The Star Spangled Banner" was played, lots of people remained seated. Then the Canadian Anthem ā€œOh Canadaā€ was played and these same people stood up and sung along. I guess the USA is not universally loved in Canada.
