To help reduce the boredom of 40mph running, I tend not to use cc; On a wide section of scway, I’ll speed upto 45ish or keep as tight to the left as possible to let the following traffic past. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve done this and some old duffer or some bird in a Chelsea tractor is too scared to pass, preferring to sit there and annoy everyone behind who is confident in getting by me.

IMO on a high proportion of A roads, not all, 40 mph is painfully slow thus mundane and boring. Its the law yes but imo i find it boring due to the lowly speed.I am now wondering if its actually boredom or frustration at being on a stretch of road which you know is actually safe to be travelling faster and that knowledge is making you feel like you do ?
Do you feel bored if on a stretch or road where going over 40 is unsafe ?
tell ya what. my new truck does 54mph and i find that boring and tiring, my old truck did 58mph and i was more awake and alert.
tango boy you need to give up truck driving and take up motor racing but then how long would it be before you got bored of doing 140?
54 or 58 hardly going to make much difference, just think about the fuel consumption.Your boss will be happy!
I picked half a dozen out as a random figure to be honest but everyone knows when they are holding up a queue of traffic. 90% of the time its some supermarket poxy and how often do they pull at 44 ton? I do quite often and yes I do pull over if I clearly have a queue behind me

Interesting discussion. I am actually looking at this one from a slightly different perspective as I live at the wrong end of a long rural S2 (single carriageway road)The road is very busy especially in summer as there are a number of tourist destinations around here (North York Moors, Whitby, Goathland etc). It is also blighted by agricultural vehicles.
And due to the nature of the landscape its a hilly and twisty road with few overtaking opportunities.
When I’m out and about in my car the number of times I end up in a queue behind some selfish [zb] in a wagon doing 39 mph is way too high. In my opinion we should be legally obliged to pull into a layby if theres more than say half a dozen cars QUEUED behind us. I do this as a matter of course when in my artic. Too many don’t and reinforce the car driver’s opinion of us as poor.
Half a dozen? You’d be pulling into every layby are you insane! Its got nothing to do with selfish this or ignorant that. The driver is going about his business within the law and within the scope of what his operator wants. If you’re pulling over every couple of miles then getting 44ton back up to speed can you imagine your fuel figures. Id say most drivers who do 40 do it because they are monitored by tracking and have kpi targets to meet. The only way your going to solve this problem isn’t some sort of’’ drivers code’’ or ‘‘good cricket old chap’’ its by petitioning the government to change the speed to 50mph. The likes of your RHA and FTA even big websites like this do sweet [zb] all in this regard. This isn’t a driver issue this is a company and government issue, a driver should not be blamed for sticking to the law. Too many people are too impatient, world is going at a million miles an hour every car you see is speeding everywhere, throttle and brake is all they know, people need to chill out.
Looking at the state of the so called A roads, anyone driving a lorry won’t be able to go any faster than 40mph because of the potholes and deterioration of them.

majority of the mways are ■■■■■ at the moment too m8
IMHO these “flat to the mat” drivers are thick as [zb],It used to be when you were driving over the speed limit you had to keep
an eye out for the white police car or motorbike.
Now they have their "saftey"camera teams to watch out for and unmarked cars.
I got caught driving over the speed limit and slowing down for the cameras because a sly pig was behind me in a silver audi quattro estate.
He followed me from Sleaford to Newark along the A17. I never even seen the [zb] in my mirror,(yes I was looking ) as I am
wise to their games. But hey it was a fair cop by an unfair [zb].
So now I display these on the back so car drivers know why I’m “holding them up”…>>>

So if you want to break the law then crack on,If you drive flat to the mat all the time you would probably be better
off the road and in a warehouse for the safety of the rest of us. So keep er lit and get them points on your licence
p.s. I know I said I was trapped but it was not my way normal everyday style of driving, and I told the cop that I had been threatened
with the sack if I was late. The gaffers reckon if Bob can do it their should be no reason why I cant, and when you mention speed
limits they jump on you and say" Are you saying Bob is driving illegally " ■■?
So now If timed deliveries and cr4p planning come together they get there in my time.
A lot of opinions stated on this thread illustrates that a lot of drivers have not grasped the fact that you do not drive a truck in the same way that you drive a car, this is one of the main causes of ■■■■ poor driving that you see more of these days, since trucks resemble cars now more than they ever did in the past from the drivers seat.

So, due to the nature of the landscape, the road is hilly and twisty, it’s an agricultural area which means high hedges, so a truck doing more than 40mph and a tractor or harvester pulls out
I used to drive a seriously underpowered wagon and drag fully loaded over woodhead to get onto the M1, there was not a chance in hell I was pulling that over to let people past, it was damned hard work. I’ve also drove on fuel bonus’, again, not stopping and starting to let a few impatient people past, they can pass when it’s safe.
I pass tractors and things when it’s safe, I don’t expect them to pull in and let me pass, and the only time you’re really stuck behind them is when a queue of cars sits behind them because they don’t know how to overtake something and then it’s too much for you to overtake as there’s 15 cars between you and the tractor.
When I am on any single carriageway , I set the cruise to 40 mph regardless of whos behind or what sort of road it is , im simply sticking to the limit that they gave me , its as simple as that.

100% behind you regard to the pulling in when a queue forms although it should be more common sense than be made law.
I said the same further up but the reply back on these discussions is always, ‘‘WHY SHOULD I, IF SOMEONE WANTS TO OVERTAKE THATS UP TO THEM’’ or ‘’‘I WOULD NEVER GET ANY WORK DONE IF I KEPT HAVING TO PULL OVER’’ etc etc…I remember in the summer just gone being in a queue as far as the eye could see infront and back doing between 5 and 15mph over a distance off approx 7 miles due to a combine harvester. He never pulled over once!! There was a police car right behind me and when the duel section came i thought, he’s going to pull him for this traffic chaos. Did the Cop pull him? Did he [zb], but i bet if someone dared to over take the harvester and happen to exceed the limit they would have been on the wrong end of a fine!!
Once when I mentioned farmers, police and lodges in the same sentence, I got a funny look.
My record is 14 miles behind a tractor.

Be very careful doing what you do.Sitting in very close to the left.I know you are trying to help but if there is an accident you could end up in trouble for encouraging vehicles to overtake by your road position.
Regarding pulling over to allow other vehicles to pass, I make every effort to allow others to do so, some just don’t want to and create the queue.
I do not agree with making it compulsory to pull over after all we are not driving “slow moving vehicles” we are driving vehicles that are capable of travelling much faster but are restricted by way of legislation. Tractors etc. are restricted by design.
What is the legal definition for ‘slow moving vehicle’

I think some people can make them up. With ease.
Good point well made.
My view is that its great having a more powerful lorry now so I can thunder past the 40mph morons whilst tweeting about them and naming and shaming them…how dare they get in my way, DONT THEY KNOW WHO I AM
