There was a discussion on here some time back about an alternative route into and out of italy.
It’s an old military route over the mountains. Any ideas?
Mont Cenis

Mont Cenis
I think that’s the one, I looked on another forum and someone mentioned a weight limit, He said you can only use it when empty, But didn’t actually say what the limit was.
I didn’t do much Italy in the olden days, So i’m looking for other routes, Firstly out of curiosity, and secondly as an alternative to sitting on my arse waiting for the italians to open the tunnels when they close them at ridiculous times.
the route with the weight limit is the one just before frejus tunnel think its about 19 ton we use to use it when empty .the other is mont cenis it used to be the conveoy exceptional route and think the miletery use it very scenic but dont be in a rush some blind tunnels and sharp bends in the tunnels been a while since i been that way might have changed since
The military route is Mont Genevre, it’s actually a milk route, rather than military, they keep it open 24/7 for the milk tankers. It’s not really an alternative as it takes ages.
You can’t do Cenis anymore as there’s a 19t limit at Lanslebourg, but if you want a really fun alternative try the Col de Sisteron or Gallibier (not positive about the second one, it’s been a while) but don’t blame me lol.
The Route Napolean down to the coast and through Ventimigllia is a nice run too, but again it takes ages.
yep newmercman is right it is mont genevaro and spot on with the takes ages some of the tunnels are awsome just carved out of bare rock and no liners just jaggy rocks sticking out ,some nice cafes at the top if you get the chance its worth a look but only if you got plenty of time .
