What was your favourite Breakfast and where!

I used to like going to Felixstowe with a Seatrain container on,the breakfast at the Routemaster in Felixstowe was superb, although the quality soon deminished, obviously costing them too much, but the full monty was exactly that, including black pudding!

There was also a cafe near Alconbury that we used to use on the way down, called the Plastic Bag,the roof leaked so they jammed in a plastic bag to stop it!they did a nice double poached egg on toast.

Take it easy,

David

The last time I was in the Routemaster was a good 10 years ago, it had really gone down hill then, the showers were manky and hardly worked, could only be described as a ■■■■ hole, shame because it was OK for years, I liked stopping there at one time.

hi lads,
from a few years back.how about “wally’s” at eynatten on the german border.a cracking stop years ago.they had a very nasty explosion and fire there in the summer 0f 1995.the place has been rebuilt and as far as i am aware is fully open and popular again.though nowadays it’s probably full of eastern europeans eating out of their own side lockers.when i used to go there it was a hive of activity and brits. going all over always stopped at “wally’s”.
regards andrew

Used to be the last meeting place for drivers on “Middle East” runs before all split up to go our seperate routes [bit of an urban myth in my opinion] !Last time I was there the Belgian police were rounding up Eastern Bloc illegals – not risked going back for overnight park since ! Now one hit Germany to the train !!

Urban myth :unamused: , it’s certainly a load of lamb fries  .
Can anybody remember stopping at The Wally Stop on a Wednesday night and having The Special, which was a bucket of Mussels a plate of chips and a bowl of Frite sauce  .

Mussel met Frites is still my favourite meal in Belgium, best go for Mussel Volante, where they just keep bringing you buckets until you plead with them to stop :stuck_out_tongue:

Chez Jo in Hautvillers also did gorgeous mussels as a starter but they seem to have stopped doing them lately :frowning:

The Woodside on the A614 between Rawcliffe and Goole.Full breakfast, always with tinned toms.
The Moat Lane Cafe, affectionately known as the “Wooden Hut” on the A57 between Cadishead and Warrington.Fried spam breakfast.
The Wychbold, side of the M5 adjacent to the A38 Droitwich turn - off.Full breakfast.
The Quernhow, northbound A1 in the 70s.Wouldn’t touch it now having read the reports. :open_mouth:
Salt Box,near Uttoxeter…proper plateful of cardiac arrest.

As Sammy says,BP Grangemouth canteen was spot on,same as Baglan Bay.
Firth Derihon Ltd,on the A6 at Darley Dale, slice of toast and mug of tea = one old penny in 1968.
What was the one at Scremerston, just south of Berwick? That was pretty good for a plateful, plenty of square sausage from just over t’border.

I think our lads called the “Wooden Hut” on the A57 “Janets” IIRC.

Yes it was Janets,Dennis and a cracking breakfast on a saturday morning before heading home!!!

The Sheperdess Cafe on the City Rd in London, double egg, double sausage, double bacon, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, bubble and fried bread, two slices and a mug of tea

I was delivering soft drinks on a four wheeler at the time, 10ton of fulls and four or five tons of empties a day up and down cellars, I used to have the calories burnt off by 11 O’clock and top up with pie, mash and liquor for the afternoon’s graft, now I get an extra chin if I even type the word pie

Your not alone NMC, I have to buy a pack of Rennies before entering a transport cafe nowadays, plus the weight gain as I pass the doormat, as a Northener I have to say that most of the finest breakfasts I’ve eaten have been within the M25. I feel indijestion being wished on me by many for speaking such things though

In the seventies sremerston cafe owned by woman called Ruby she worked nights,on days Betty Brown ran it,Bettys daughter now runs beal service-station on the a1.canged over at the cafe for three years at that time.vic.

The Oasis, Canning Town, huge oval plate full of everything twice!

In it’s heyday in the 70s n 80s the Quernhow was the best cafe on the A1. After a sherbet or two at Wetherby the night before most of the lads from the north east headed there, it was often quite a struggle to get in and it wasn’t cheap but the quality was excellent, the owner Brian or his wife were always on hand if there were any issues. It was a sad day when they sold up as the place has never been the same since.
I stopped going in there about 5years ago as the place was filthy, the food was garbage, well matched by the staff!! Its now bypassed by the new road and I cant see anyone going out of their way to use it. kevmac47.

without a doubt the cedars on the A45 at Coventry, good grub and plentyy of it , spotless place very fond memories. does anyone happen to know what happened to john who used to own it , he cant be that old

Anyone remember Sam’s at Fiveways can’t remeber exactly where but on the way north before Warwick just on the left before a roundabout. Had parking at the rear but I could nearly always park near the front as I had a AEC Mercury 4 wheeler. It was always busy and had a breakfast to die for!

Sorry to be so vague but it was over 30 years ago.

Yes, I remember that place Pat, it was a nice breakfast, when the traffic stop using that road because of the M40 it changed to an Italian resturant but I went past a few months back and there’s new houses on there now.

I used to stop at a little cafe just off the A34 on the Wantage rd. at East Hendred, Going north from the M4 you came off and went past Harwell research centre then turned left on the A 417? wantage rd. was only a small place but it was clean and the food was the best you’d get anywhere.

Is Alf’s Cafe still there just off the Hog’s Back?

And while I’m over that way does anyone remember Umberto’s at Farnborough?

There was a nice cafe in a lay-by going into Wokingham.

Pixes just outside Bedford on the A428full english with Fresh uncut bread…

Aye that was a cracker too,you had to reverse into the parking off the road, room for maybe ten wagons side by side, great grub & very friendly.

Ainacs, yep the one at fiveways was the best in the area once you were north of Wellesbourne. Far better than Lincoln Farm just up the road. Big solid wooden tables & a blinding full english.
