Chris Webb:
The Woodside on the A614 between Rawcliffe and Goole.Full breakfast, always with tinned toms.
The Moat Lane Cafe, affectionately known as the “Wooden Hut” on the A57 between Cadishead and Warrington.Fried spam breakfast.
The Wychbold, side of the M5 adjacent to the A38 Droitwich turn - off.Full breakfast.
The Quernhow, northbound A1 in the 70s.Wouldn’t touch it now having read the reports.
Salt Box,near Uttoxeter…proper plateful of cardiac arrest.
As Sammy says,BP Grangemouth canteen was spot on,same as Baglan Bay.
Firth Derihon Ltd,on the A6 at Darley Dale, slice of toast and mug of tea = one old penny in 1968.
What was the one at Scremerston, just south of Berwick? That was pretty good for a plateful, plenty of square sausage from just over t’border.
Hi Chris,
The Wychbold cafe has been knocked down and there’s a beefeater pub and a McDonald’s on site now. There is a new truckstop just above your namesake Webbs garden centre called the Pitstop, thats quite good.Did call at the salt box years ago,it was very good.
Cheers Dave.

I think our lads called the “Wooden Hut” on the A57 “Janets” IIRC.

I think it was the Wychbold I remember, always a cracking place with not much parking.
Salt Box is still alive and kicking and they only use white cap for cooking!
jacko22:
Can we add a continental flavour too! The Ham n eggs with fresh bread at Jayat… I know the place was not everyones cup of tea
Not half Jacko, I couldn’t stand the bloody place i so wish I could remember where the wooden chalet was on the left side on the way down from the Blanc - ham eggs bread and coffee on a Saturday morning after punching from Prato or Poggibonsi through the night were wonderful
An honourable mention goes to the now closed company canteen at Tennants Wellpark Brewery in Glesga, all the usual heart stoppers plus tattie scones and square sausage too, and at subsidised prices

It cannot be on the left side coming down Blanc in France as there was only one premises on that side & it was/is a souvenir shop !
I think you mean just around les Houches before you get to the steep run down towards the “steel works” – under a bridge and pull in to your right. Wooden chalet restaurant + a filling station that has been AS24 and Shell. Pull through and back on to road down. Limited overnight parking + good toilets & hot water !!
Northern boy:
Its got to be STEVES butty van around the corner from our depot in WIGAN (its across from jjb) sausage egg and black pudding on a barm
By eck N.B. I can just imagine that warm runny egg running down the side of my chin, have one for me will ya .
After spending the night in Paisley and heading south, I always used to go to Crawford on the A74 and cross over the duel carrigeway where they served the square sausage.
Theres a thing Dave Mackie why were Scottish sausages always square .
If you remember most of the big companies in the sixties and seventies had subsidised canteens where visiting drivers were often made welcome, one of the best breakfasts and dinners was at NABISCO biscuits in Welwyn Garden City and I will always remember the Friday fish dinner in the Dockers canteen at Hull Docks .
Cant remember the Name but it was a typical cafe on the A56 near where Hinchcliffes had a yard .Used to have the Full English whilst Picking up Flags/Kerbs out of Marshalls not far down the Road .Near Ramsbottom)always nice and warm with cheerfull service.Did’nt them cafes have a smell of there own.
dafdave:
Full brecky at the pigeon fanciers on a38 off j1 m50,grub always fresh and cafe and toilets clean.
regards dave.
One of if not the best places going in it’s day.
Hi Dave & John,
Do you mean the Pigeon Flyer, just north of Tewkesbury on the A38,if so,last I heard it’s still good.
Cheers Dave.
No dave the one we are on about was 500yds north of the ,m50 after coming off at jk1.On reflection it could be the same place depends on how far north of tewkesbury you mean.
regards dave.
hi lads,
from a few years back.how about “wally’s” at eynatten on the german border.a cracking stop years ago.they had a very nasty explosion and fire there in the summer 0f 1995.the place has been rebuilt and as far as i am aware is fully open and popular again.though nowadays it’s probably full of eastern europeans eating out of their own side lockers.when i used to go there it was a hive of activity and brits. going all over always stopped at “wally’s”.
regards andrew
Anyone remember the OLD Star cafe, on the old A74 south of Lesmahagow? (between jnc 10 and 11 of M74). Decent meal and a great breakfast to settle the stomach after a night on the “heavy” in the pub down the road. I think the owners name was Jean?
Also for a quick served breakfast with decent bubble and squeak was The Hollies.
Lots more I could mention, but my local favourite is the “Rosy Lee” in Seaside Road, Eastbourne, (only round the corner from my house!!) still going and the best breakfast for miles!
Always used to love the breakfast at Todhills A74, just before the start of the M6 sth bnd. Lovely big thick bit o gammon bacon, and plent of parking. Always felt like you were sitting in someones front room. The wychbold cafe J6 of the M6 was good, when you ordered your breakfast the old gel behind the counter always used shout back to the kitchen " ONE EGG " always used to make me laugh. And thats all you used to hear when you was eating.

Aye that was a cracker, quite tiny but very good. Also Granellis at the bottom of the old lorry park in Oldham or the one behind the garage on the East Lancs by the lights nr Leigh, lot of the welsh lads used it,both of those were where you would get a big galvanised jug of hot water to go out the back for your wash & brush up. The Kirtlebridge on the 74 southbound was always good too & again I forget the name, but the cafe just outside Wellesbourne going down the 429,always full of Howard Tenens & IIRC the Electrolux lads from down Eastbourne way with all their 23 & 2500 DAFs, think it was popular with Tolemans lads too. West Bilney on the A47,The Victoria outside Wisbech, just too many to list but I guess my fave brekky was The Wooden Hut on the 57 & for evening meal/dinner the steak pie at Croxton Kerrial
