What is the best lorry ever made

JIMBO47:
Its a hard one ,from a bosses view or a drivers view, what you class as the best ■■?
i never drove for companies wi the biggest and top o the range buggies…horses for courses…speaking as a driver a wagon that started, stopped and didnt let me down ,wasnt the fastest nor the slowest …
for me it was a LHD Maggie 192/16 M drawbar outfit .never a problem!.
I have a soft spot for the Volvo F10 wi a 16speed box as well.
also not forgeting the auld Mack CH daycab (last o the real Macks) i drive …its a wee bit noisy, a few rattles, pulls like a train…and a big plus you can sort at the side o the road …not a lot of electrics…people wont sell them if they run them.
best i can say …jimmy (33yrs driving).

I mean from a driver’s view

I was given a break by one the best men in the haulage industry. He gave me ultra long haul fridge work with the best equipment available at the time, all left ■■■■■■, tag axle, top power, full spec tractors the best of which, by a long shot was the Scania 143-450 and 500, what a truck

It seems the 143 is the best lorry ever made but what about the 142 or the 164

I do have a 142E double drive, like brand new but I wouldn’t want to go far in it, ancient compared to a 143.

Also who doesn’t agree that a streamline topline was a looker? Even factory white. Can’t say that about a new FH

Did you even get a 143 top line I think it was a lowline, highline, starline but your right they still are one of the best looking lorries ever made way better than the volvos of them years

They were flat roof, topline and on the continent, Starline but it wasn’t about the build, as a driver it was about the drive, (and the sound)

I also had a Transcon, an iconic lorry and no doubt about that in my mind, however they were long in the tooth by then and apart from the image and reputation they were no better than any of the other British lorries with the ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ driveline. Maybe in the 70s they were up there with the best, but then again given the choice of a 141, an 89 or a Transcon, I think the Big Henry would come last almost every time.

I loved mine, driving a Transcon down to the bottom of Italy was a dream come true for me, literally, as I had a fleet of Corgi Transcons as a kid, but best lorry ever made, no way, not even in the top ten as far as I’m concerned

Me dad swore by the things, we had several arguments about them, he had several other ■■■■■■■ rockwell fuller combinations… And all werent up to much compared to his transcons (in his eyes at least)

Mind you once he finally bought some MAN’S he had to admit they werent too bad…had a couple of 331 and never missed a beat…awful uncomfy mind you.

Ah the sound…who cant deny lowering the windows and dropping down a gear while driving a 143 / 142 in a tunnel… Haha cab happy days !!!

Thanks lad you now your lorries too. It’s nice to see another fan of the 143s

Thinking about it… The best lorry made is the one that gets you home without breaking down or having hissy fits while doing it…and the one the one that you can bodge with a bit of wire and a hammer when it does decide to ■■■■ about…so in my humble opinion a DAF 2800 wins the day… Im sure evryone has other ideas.

Daf 2800s where very simple lorries so there won’t much to go wrong and if they did they won’t be hard to fix and you could get a top of the line speacecab which had a massive cab for those days and if you wanted more power you could of had a 3300 or a 3600 and I think they where very good looking lorries too so over all good lorry

Here’s a link to a picture of a scania 143 450 streamline pulling a lowloader with a daf 3300 speacecab ati flickr.com/photos/gyles/6162 … otostream/

What would you’d buy if you where a owner driver.
I would buy a 95 superspace myself because there cheap to buy powerful have lots of space in the cab and good looking the only bad things about them are they can be hard to see out of sometimes and not the best gearbox. but they wouldn’t leat you down. best lorry for under £7000 anyway. You wouldn’t get a topline or a globetrotter for that
