What is a "trombone"?

Not a term I am familiar with. I was speaking to a guy who said he had a long load on (rigid) so he had the trombone extended… what is it??

Trombone trailers are flats or step frames that extend. I presume he has a rear bumper / light bar that slides out effectively making the body longer on his rigid, often seen on Hiab flats doing cabins etc.

a trombone is a term for a extendable trailer it extends in the middle I guess a rigid extension would come out the rear

I guess they are pretty sturdy but they always look like they are about to snap like that last picture.
Looks like a lot of stress on the frame.

Could you not have worked it out?

In the 70’s a mate and myself got fed up with calling them trombones, so we started calling them Banjo trailers, use to get some funny looks as only the two of us knew what we were on about.

What are them in the last pic ? Seen colletts with them never known what they are called or how they work , heavy haulage looks good work always something different
