There have been a few instances when it was alleged that some would hold conversations with themselves via sock-puppets.
I have never found that need as I have never found any problems in getting some one to disagree with me.
I do have another ID but have only used it once or twice. And that was ages ago.
What about 2 people from the same household sharing an IP address? 
No shandy here either, no bank holiday 'till Monday. 
@franglais I didn’t know that and I was a mod in the dim and distant. 
On the old forum those who were on “pre-mod” and had to have their posts cleared, had those posts inserted at the point they were made.
It now appears that posts are inserted at the time they are cleared.
So on a quiet thread that makes little difference, but on a busy one it was the case that …ummm… DropSlow would post at one point, and by the time the post appeared it would have several posts after it, and so be missed.
Now it appears at the foot of the tread as if freshly written, not buried in the middle.
No need for a different IP address…from a reliable source… 
Possibly one account per e-mail? Not sure on that.
Indeed, another reason for the Mods/Admin not to monitor it.
Easily done with a VPN, or the now unsupported JonDonym, though my sources tell me it apparently still works to access Pirate Bay et al . Or there’s TAILS, but that is harder to use these days than it used to be.
Email accounts? I don’t know about you but I have about ten different ones: work only account, private only, anti-spam sign-up to random websites account, plus everytime I made a YouTube channel for the kids I ended up with yet another gmail account
I wonder how many power stations are being built to power all the unused e-mails in the www? I guess when dormant those accounts use very little.
Fewer than the ones powering Bitcoin anyway!

Email accounts not being actively used don’t burn a lot of energy, though, it must be said that generally, few people, including today’s placard-waving-vegan-Wokees totally ignore the energy demands of the internet.
I have a married vegan nephew who posts about things like “Taylor Swift’s private plane mileage”, all the while using multiple electronic devices seemingly 24-7 and taking trans-Atlantic plane flights multiple times throughout the year because they “need a holiday”

You’ve reminded me of something, way back in the mists of time, I could not understand why one person’s, and one person’s only, posts always seemed out of synch with the run of the conversation, and it was explained to me that it was just that they had to be cleared before publication.
On the old TN I had two IDs but I made it clear to admin and mods that I didn’t intend to make mischief with the 2nd one. I stuck to that rule. Sadly, many on there did make mischief with their multiple IDs. As mentioned above, it’s difficult to prevent this, as posters now use a variety of portals.
But we’re only really bothered about the Trolls and mischief-makers, and the worst offenders generally have an element of ‘forensic linguistics’ that give an indication of who they are

Indeed, I successful unmasked one offender precisely by studying the linguistic patterns.
