Welsh Border and Mid Wales Hauliers 1950's onwards

Hiya Dave I was in that sky diving place at Prees a few weeks ago, The chap who runs the sky diving used to be a mechanic at Adams butter at Leek and he told me Malcom had filled one of those hangers with alsorts of tackle. I worked for malc when he run a small fleet from Leek in the 70s.thats why the subject come up.Do’nt all shout at once telling me i’am wrong but I think Malc had the First Ford D series custom cab, It was early 1965 A flat with a primrose
third axel making it a six wheeler. He also had 5 new trucks before he was 21 and had to employ drivers because of his age.
John

Hi boys
John I live in Ash overlooking Prees Heath and go past the hangers each morning to work. It’s good to see somthing happening to the hangers, if all the do gooders had there way they would be pulled down to make room for the butterflys. I first came accross Malc in the 80’s when he was operating from just north of Stone and used to see him regularly at Rothwell truck sales buying and selling. BTW did you go up skydiving if you did you would have gone over my house.

Regards Keith.

Hi Keith,
How come nobodies bought that white place thats right by the 49/41 doughnut at Prees Heath, its been semi derelict for years, there must be a lot of potential for a motel or something there with all those outbuildings.
Cheers Dave.

One of Ken’s Tipper Hire Renaults having a cuppa,at the 49 T Bar,just north of Craven Arms,an educated guess, the driver is Martin Burton, one of the old hands.

Hi boys
Dave, I understand it has or had planing for a motel. Must be too much money, there’s not much of that around here. There has always been arguments about ownership and rights of different parts of Prees Heath I’m not shore if that has been a issue here.

Regards Keith

Hi Keith,
Thought there must be some snag or reason for it being left like that. I know the money isn’t around, but there are still plenty of people with money for the right investment. I suppose its not considered a good risk by the people in the know,it always struck me that it sat on two busy roads, but I suppose there’s already enough to keep the travellers fed and watered plus the hotel.
Cheers Dave.

Keith i first jumped in 1973 and the chap who follwed me on his first jump was Pat Walters, He runs that jump school now it took over his life, He left Adams butter he was the night forman, left his missus moved away from where he lived, I think he has done over 3000 jumps now. when i used the A41 (daily) i called in on him Fridays as i was only running back to Chester via the Raven. That was over 8 years ago now.I’ve retired to many rules and reggs.
John
Is Cedric still going strong■■? He’s a bad influence but a good laugh.

Hi boys
John, you woulde’nt get me up there at any cost especaly after that lad jumped out of the plane a few months ago and both he shoots failed. It was a good job the hangers were still there to brake his fall. What a lucky chap.It was his passion as well taking photos while people were jumping. He wrote in the Whitchurch Herald after hundreds of jumps he was going to give it up,not wishing to push his luck.
Cedric ? sorry was he the owner of the Raven. It’s to close to home for me. People say which is the better cafe there, hardly ever go in,go home instead…

Regards Keith.

Hi boys
The min’s of our local council meeting was posted on our village notice board last month. The council want to put double yellow lines infront of the garage at Prees heath to make the trucks use the pay and display truck park. They also want all trucks to exit left out of the said truck park and return to the roundabout when they want to go north on the A41.They do not want the trucks joining the A41 vie the little road up between the Raven and the cafes. There has been mobil surveilance cameras chained to posts on that road through to Tilstock on and off over the last year. What is the world coming to, can’t they leave things as they are…
I’ve got of my soap box, now I need a lie down.

Regards Keith.

Saw these Army machines on about six lowloaders on the A4112 at Sarnsfield in Herefordshire, could have been more, but I turned off for Kington

Hi Keith,
That just about sum’s up the thinking of local authorities,I am a local councilor. We had a highways engineer wanting to take away the slip roads at Stanner on the A44,where the Quarry traffic enter and exit the main road for Strinds/Dolyhir Quarries,it would have been a catastrophe if he had done that,we had a hell of a job persuading him not to do it.
We suggested a 50 mph speed limit,he said its not a built up area,we said loads of other roads in open country have them,he just wouldn’t listen. This bloke was the senior engineer in highways for our County Council. Bloody mad. :imp:
Cheers Dave.

One of Burgoynes of Lyonshall, and one of H Lea-Oakes taking a break at Bayston Hill,by the side of the A49.

Hi Dave,

At long last Im adding a few pics!

These were taken a couple of weeks ago on the A1 in Cambridgeshire - a long way from the Welsh borders I know, but I didnt think you would mind as they show tippers at work.

Some of the pics are not the best but I was fighting the sun!!

The first is a distant shot of the line up as they are waiting to be called down to the machine.

Sadly no Fodens or ERFs to be seen, just a multitude of Volvos, Scania and DAF.

First man down was a DAF 85 still wearing the outgoing Hanson colours.

Then we have a Tarmac Scania with a mighty air con box on top

I was pleased to see a DAF in the traditional Yeoman colours, shortly to become white no doubt.

Speaking of which here is a Yeoman Asphalt liveried FM Globetrotter. It certainly looks the part

More to follow soon.

Mark

Brilliant set of photos there mate. Always nice to see a few insulateds on site waiting to tip.
I know the company colours are becoming bland and it’s very rare (if at all) you see the traditional one man bands on these jobs, but I still like to see pics such as these. Cheers.

Hi Mark,
As Bonkey say’s a brilliant set of pics, you must have had a good vantage point on a bridge or something to get those shots.Doesn’t matter where the pics are from, its good to see them, the Welsh Border is very flexible  ,as you’ve seen from some of my pics.
Cheers Dave.

Greta pics roadcommander. Been on a few of these sort of jobs in my time…although not lately. :frowning: Must be 14 of em waiting to tip, plus one on the machine.

Met this Merc pulling a T D Williams, trailer on the A49 in Dorrington, Shropshire.

Saw this Volvo on the A49 on Church Stretton bypass.

Thanks for the positive comments chaps.

Bonkey, you are absolutely right. Apart from the Globetrotter below all of the other eight wheelers were in the major players colours. Like you, I remember and was involved in these jobs when it was one man bands and small operators with their own liveries hauling the black.

What suprised me on this job was that there were Hanson, Tarmac and Bardon/Yeoman lorries on the same job, never would have happened once.

Dave, you are right, I was standing on the overbridge and I have to say it was bl**dy freezing, the wind was certainly whipping up the A1.

Anyway, here are a few more.

The only “independent” on the job

Bardon and Tarmac on the same job, who would have thought it?

White Hanson for good measure with plenty of orange lights up top.

Scania on the machine

The only MAN on the job.

Still got a few more to go!

Cheers
Mark

Hi Mark,
Another cracking set of pictures, its always good to see a line up of lorries at a big job.I know they are in the main, white nowadays, but they all have something different about them, either a few lights or the firm has put something on.
Cheers Dave.
