Hi Nathan,
The hauliers and O/Dās this way get nowhere near that amount. They are struggling at the moment to get a decent rate for most of the work they do.I canāt for obvious reasons say to much on here, but several have got out, with more looking to do the same.
The job featured in the pics is one of the better oneās,so Iāve been told.
Cheers Dave.
hi dave have heard lot of s/wales boys are packing in due to drop in rates and little work and i know exactly what you mean about waiting time/day work rates been there done that cheers martyn.

Cheers Dave.

hi dave i can guess who that is . we used to get £25.00 ph you could be dumping in the quarry for that would be unusual to get day work on muckaway jobs but if you did you would be on £38./£40.00 ph nowadays everything is on the load .
we were sometimes asked by the said company to do day work with our outside lorries and we used to get payed £38.00 ph.

Its still £25 ph,as you say.Nathan was saying down his way they get £50 ph,they charge more than that to the customer up here and give the haulier £25,but thats how the big outfits work,as you know.
Cheers Dave.

Muckaway:
If you want a nice relaxing driving job, you can do worse than driving a 6 wheeler on asphalt; most jobs are footpath ones for Council where they pay waiting time as they rake the stuff into wheelbarrows. An OD I know runs a 6 wheeler and 4x 8 wheelers and says his 6 makes the most profit because of the waiting time (say Ā£50p/hour) the load delivered and the fact the lorryās using no fuel or wear and tear whilst on site.
Fifty quid an hour is dreamland. I subbie for one of the big boys and we get 25/hr after one hour when tipping on a paver. If youāre on handlay/daywork you get 25/hr but straight from arrival on site. The only way to make any more is to put chutes on the back door, then you get 30/hr on handlay but still only 25 on the machine.
Unfortunately, the only way youāll make any decent money at the moment is with a decent chunk of handlay/waiting time each day really. The rates, particularly drystone are ā ā ā ā ā ā ā ā to the point where over 50% of what you earn goes on diesel.
I occasionally do daywork but the council work is either done by their own wagons or has to be contracted for and the last I heard the daywork rate was 8 quid an hour LESS than I would charge on daywork.
Regular daywork (i.e. muckshifting etc) is the same, I was recently undercut on daywork by 2quid an hour by and 8-wheeler, and Iām a 6!! Iām sticking to my prices but its not easy.

Exactly the same here hammer, they have cut the rates to the bone, quite a few O/Dās have packed it in. I hope that they get short of lorries, thats the only way they will pay a bit more. For the first time in my life I heard an old time haulier moaning about them, its not good.
Cheers Dave.
Dave around here too many have gone down the āFranchise Haulierā route. 45 contracts vs about 16 independants is a crazy ratio. Its really gone quiet here the last few weeks, theyāve managed to keep the contract trucks going pretty well through the recession but lately even theyāve been quiet. I wouldnāt like to have a truck stood with 1200/month finance hanging over me. As we feed off their scraps pretty much you can imagine how rushed off me feet I am!
If it wasnāt for small jobs that the 8ās canāt get in, us 6ās would never go out.
Fingers crossed for an improvement soon.

Its the same this way, half of them are parked up at 1pm,if it wasnāt for the night work and weekends on tarmac, things would be even worse.I think it will be to long a winter for a lot of them.
