I was on the Punta Sabbioni to Venice ferry and the Volvo was on its way to a middle of (water) nowhere building site!! I saw the swell/waves coming over the front of the barge a few times and I was also thinking “bloody nora!”
Whilst in Venice I saw a few ‘Owner Drivers’, well . . . the Venice version anyway.
The ‘vehicle’ is only about half of the journey. The rest is good old barrow and handball!!
Note the small wheels on the front extension of the barrow. That is how the ‘driver’ gets up and over the many stepped bridges that criss-cross the inner canals. These guys were a deft hand at it and every bridge crossed was like bench-pressing weights down the gym. I didn’t see an overweight ‘delivery driver’ and I guess a routine days work for them is like a day shift down the gym on the weights for us!!!
