Well Spotted VOSA

Whilst climbing up towards Ainley Top on Monday I spied a stripey people carrier about a mile in front :stuck_out_tongue: As I approached he gave me the once over and then pulled out and overtook me with his little signs saying follow me, vehicle check.

Now I already knew the reason for my pull  but had to go through the motions with them.

While I was on holiday last time I had my windscreen replaced and in the process the old o licence holder got chewed up and the disc slipped behind the dash we think  I had noticed this on my daily checks and had a copy of a copy made from the office, A new one was applied for and I duly forgot about it.

This week just reminded me that there are good reasons for these VOSA people, they are not just there to prosecute but advise and help. Within a few minutes he had established that I had indeed a valid o licence, but a photo copy was not a good idea as it looked like fraud :open_mouth: He told me to remove it and he would check with Harehills. This morning I had a new disc delivered by post and all is well.

Not so lucky was the bloke who was pulled in at the side of me, but deservedly will get what is coming to him

A very tatty white 35cwt Ford Transit pickup with flat rear tyres, The reason they were flat was this absolute dipstick had loaded the back with scrap copper wire. The vehicle was weighed off at 4870kg. This alerted the VOSA mena to other faults and so after an inspection the Police were called, who discovered the road tax was stolen, the driver was disqualified, and there was no insurance on the vehicle.

So this prompted another call to the DSS who also found out this bloke was registered disabled and claiming benefit, he cant have been so disabled to handball all that copper wire into his van :stuck_out_tongue:

Another call to the Customs revealed that the vehicle was running on red diesel. I left Ainley Top as the Transit was being winched very slowly on to a recovery truck and the driver was being taken for his first meal of bread and water

Technollogy is really getting too superior diesel testing over the phone? what next…

count your self extremly lucky, the ministry take a very dim view of copied discs which of coarse is a crimminal offense and not reporting a lost disc is also a big no no, i’d be having a seriouse word with the tm!

r

Are we obliged to follow the VOSA vehicle?
I thought police only had had the power of stopping you.
Has the law been changed?

Ossie its all on here vosa.gov.uk/vosa/carlgvowner … .htm#P4_54

Heres a question i’d like answered though, it is an offence to impersonate a Police officer in this country BUT is ti an offence to impersonate a VOSA officer■■?.. the mind boggles…

It says something at the bottom about it but not enough really.

Thanks Jammymutt

you’d have to think it is, they have the same powers as a copper in terms of charge and arrest although as i understand it if you don’t obey the follow me sign they don’t have the authority for pursuit.

A new one was applied for and I duly forgot about it.

I had already done that Paul.

I also made a copy of the disc that matches my community authorisation which iincidentally is a certified copy, as the original has to be kept in the office with the operator licence

It is an offence to impersonate an Examiner appointed under Secn 66A of the Road Traffic Act (Traffic Examiners & Vehicle Examiners) although the actual legislation has escaped me at the moment.

Similarly, it is an offence to fail to stop/follow. The people driving the marked vehicles are accredited by the Chief Constable of the County (or Counties) as a Community Support Officer. So failing to stop is just like failing to stop for a Police Constable. They generally don’t pursue in the strictest sense of the word, but the vehicles are equipped with video cameras so they can show the tape later in Court.

Whilst VOSA have the powers to being offences to Court they do not have the same arrest powers as the Police. Although there is nothing stopping anybody from carrying out a Citizens Arrest.

Finally, use a document with intent to deceive can carry a maximum fine of upto £ 5 000 and two years in a holiday camp on the Isle of Wright or some such scenic place. Best not to display the copy in the windscreen, but carry it in the cab with a supporting letter from the Operator showing the date that they had applied to Traffic Area for the replacement disc. That way there is no deceipt as you are making an honest statement.

Nice story malc especially where the
transit driver was caught

sorry i thought you meant you’d photo copied the disc and put it in the screen, which of coarse you couldn’t do because they’d lost the disc
all becomes clear

However the police do and they’re only a phone call away.

Did the bloke with the Transit have an irish accent by any chance?

Saw a builders pickup pulled up in the car park at Tesco Dover last year, it was a 2WD Toyota Hilux with about 4 pallets (for want of a better description) of bricks in the back. he seemed puzzled as to why the police had pulled him over? Pretty dumb considering Coastal brick (where he had been) deliver for free!

I never heard him speak, but I am sure that the Irish have corner shops too :stuck_out_tongue:
