Weekend work HGV work in addition to my non HGV work

Hi
I have recently passed my HV class 2 test and am in possession of tacho card and CPC.
I am currently employed in a full time job ,Monday to Friday, which I wish to change to HGV driving.
Since the hourly pay rate for starter HGV driver is less than what I am getting now and most employers want experienced drivers for pay rate that I am after, is it possible in your opinion for me to do weekend HGV driver work, both to get some driving experience and some additional money?

Absolutely, as long as you satisfy weekly/ fortnightly rest and WTd for both current employer and the hgv operator

I am currently doing this every other weekend for a supermarket. So far, so good, and they have given me a Sunday shift whenever I have declared myself as available. I passed Class 2 last August and started looking for this arrangement shortly afterwards, but didn’t find anything suitable until I passed Class 1 in January. I luckily managed to get a driving assessment a few weeks after passing, but I think it’s easier with class 1 to get the ad-hoc weekend work I was looking for.

The limitation is basically that you are able to work one day on each weekend per fortnight, to allow for 45 consecutive hours rest time each fortnight. Try to sign up with some agencies and tell them your requirements and best of luck!

Depends on where you are in the country. I’m in exactly the same situation as you, full time job, non driving and not bad pay but Since passing my class 2 I’ve registered with 3/4 agencies in the hope of getting weekend work but so far I’ve had one lousy shift! I’m based in Glasgow and thought there would be plenty work at weekends, there is but not for class 2 and what is available is either going to experienced drivers or the pay is £11 an hour max for crap work.

I’ve been on holiday this week from my main job and told the agencies this and all I got was a shift in a sprinter van. It seems the driver shortage doesn’t apply up here.

Generally you will legally be able to do one driving shift every other weekend so that you comply with the weekly rest rules

Am I right in saying that if you take a reduced weekly rest it has to be paid back by the forth week. So if only driving one day every other weekend, a day would need to be taken off during week by week 4. So couldn’t work 5 day in one job then work 1 day driving every other weekend.

Only the amount of hours owed by the reduced weekend needs paying back in one go

This would be a typical legal example

Weekend 1
Drive sat 6am to 9pm
Start Mon 8am
That is a reduced weekly rest of 35 hours with 10 to pay back

Weekend 2
Finish Fri 6pm
Start Mon 8am
That a regular weekly rest of 62 hours which is 45+17
10 of that 17 can be used as payback for weekend 1

That make more sense now. Everyday is a school day. Thanks ROG

Just remember that 35hrs 1 minute is fine as weekly rest but 34hrs 59 minutes is not.
