If I could get away with being away from home for the amount of time required I’d be racing you there!

Always see his trailers at Dunbia, a couple of miles from my house. Even the wife (about as much interest in trucks as I have in Eastenders) noticed his trucks through the village.

Tried any of the “oil industry” firms Lubbers, Grampian Continental, MDF?

This is it …not as bad as most Euro firms …Pete used to keep you too two weeks maximum…I could guarantee which weekends I was working for months in advance …which is unusual in transport !

Out of interest guys, does the euro work tend to pay better?

Thanks

Would say probably about the same although on the continent you are treated much better with better facilities and generally seem to do less hours with less hassle than when I am working on UK work

Depends how yow calculate it? And of course who youre working for? Id suggest at years end youll earn as much working for a UK only firm as for a UK haulier operating into the Eu. Hourly rates may not be a good measure of pay. Many Euro companies will pay by the day, or some by salary. If youre hourly paid in Euroland and are waiting for a load youll not be too happy. from experience those of us who prefer Eu work tend to do so as a choice of work type / life style as much as any financial gain.

Not to sure I follow here? Are you saying that you will work more but for the same money by the end of the year? But you prefer the work type so that’s why you do it?

Also didn’t understand why you would be unhappy sat waiting to load if you was on hourly pay?

Thanks again

Sorry if I was unclear. Some employers will only pay you when youre working. If they dont have a load theyll tell you to book off, so you sit on zero pay. Not many left like that, but they do exist. As a personal point of view I dont work out my hourly pay. (Im sure this will raise a storm). I leave home and go to work. It doesnt seem overly relevant to me if my time away is spent driving, loading, or sitting reading a book. Some days I work less than 7 hours, but can work no more as customers may closed. My pay is the same as if I was working. Not my fault the p-up point is shut. Another day I may put in a 15hr spread. No extra for this. (But the sooner the jobs done the sooner Im home). Swings and roundabouts I reckon. No work on a Friday afternoon? Early home. Timed delivery on Mon? early start. It wont suit everyone, but it does for me. I know how much Ill have earnt by April 6th and for an interesting, busy, but not excessive workload I`m fairly content thank you.

I got to be honest it sounds good to me…

Appeals to you? Most drivers at our company have been there years. Some come n go but there aint a big turnover of drivers and no driverless trucks. Some of our lads travel 4 or 5 hours to our depot, so they cant be too unhappy. There may be a problem lying in wait tho, as most of us now have grey hair and whiskery ear oles. Going away all week, or longer, doesnt seem to appeal much to younger drivers. But each to their own eh? If European driving appeals to you, make sure you get on for a reputable company. (Easier said than done I know). As I said not for everyone but an interesting job, with a lot of autonomy, and sufficient reward, both in job satisfaction and adequate money. (P.S. Im not a boss looking for new blood, just a fairly content driver, and there aint too many around this site it seems).

Well I’m brand new to this so it may be a novelty? But really does appeal at the moment!
Class c is starting 29/3/16 then class 1 asap, I’m moving from a job where funny enough I do ok an can manage to go to work with a smile on my face (most days) I’ve always fancied this but never got around to it… Not looking to make a million just to be happy in my work an financially stable.

First shift I’ll look for is 4on 4off tramping and I don’t mind anything with in a 150 mile radius of my home as I’ll only be doing it once a week. Then for sure once I’ve gained experience I’d love a crack at Euro work, it may or may not be for me but there’s only one way to find out and I fancy it at the minute.

Sounds like youve a good attitude to me. (Not that being an old ■■■■ gives me the right to pass judgement). Many people talk about regretting those things they never tried, rather than those they did try. Get a few miles under your belt then see if still seems a good idea. Once you can handle your vehicle without thinking (as most drivers seem too!) youll maybe be looking for more to keep you thinking. Wrong side of the road, finding & arranging deliveries and p=ups in a foreign language all help keep the grey cells active. Good food with wine included all sound good too. Sitting in a Routiers where you aint looked at as a wierdo if you chat with a stranger is an antidote to UK MSAs. 5 nights away every week or a straight 10 or 12 days away with a long week end off between may cool your enthusiasm a bit tho! Not always a good choice if youre raising a young family. Still enough of me wittering away. Think about it carefully, but dont be afraid of giving it a go, and then changing your mind. Euro work aint always a fatal disease.

Thanks for the comment on the attitude, I try to enjoy everything weather it’s work or play…
The long weekends off sound good to me, I bet if you can end up in the rite location now again they can be good?

Like you say after a few miles under the belt, I can give it a whirl ( I’ll come here to find out what company’s to be avoiding) if it turns out its it for me I can find something else while its ongoing.

My only concern like you say is the family. It’s just me an the Mrs at the moment, but there is talk of a family and this dosnt appeal to me as a “day man”. See how it pans out I spose…
