Wales 20 MPH cycle race

You could not make this up if you tried.

20mph speed limit roads force historic cycling race to alter course as support vehicles risk fines (msn.com)

I heard that on the radio earlier. Surely you fall under speed limit regulations on a push iron too? Didn’t they used to class it as “furious cycling”? Or something equally as arcane

Don’t understand it, as the Tour of Britain came through the Rhondda Fach last year and the area was already a 20mph zone. They just used rolling road blocks for a few miles at a time.

Most of the cycling is done at speeds of over 30mph anyway so suspect it’s just a bit of clickbait.

Its not the cyclists but the support cars which were the problem, there was no way of them to keep up through the 20mph zones without speeding. So it was deemed not possible to run the race through those sections.

Yeah it’s the cars that can’t keep up.
Surely they could cover the speed cameras or turn them off as they pass through.
Imagine living in Wales being restricted to 20 mph your out for a drive in your car and get over taken by cyclists who can’t be traced and given a ticket.

There was an interview with one of the organisers about this, but I can’t find it at the moment.
It was intended to temporarily drop the speed limits to enable the support cars, m/cycles, vans, to break the 20mph barrier, but it was more complicated than thought so, didn’t go through in time.
I confess I was only half listening so could have misunderstood it.
I’ll look again.

Apparently not, it said on the report I heard that it was not a problem for the cyclists as they are not bound by the 20mph limit just the support vehicles…

Flipping lycra clad road rodents! :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

Never understood why cyco clubs are allowed to organise races and time trials on public roads but try doing the same as a car club. Even the RAC rally cars have to stay within the speed limits between stages :unamused:  :rage:

Yeah I seem to have a distant memory (most of mine are nowadays :rage:) of it being illegal to hold, partake in or organise a race or time trial on an open and public highway. Seems that this particular law doesn’t apply to the lycra louts.

I remember a lot of the WRC drivers being issued speeding tickets and points…

didnt damon hill get banned for driving through the dartford tunnel approach at 90+ mph

Road Rodents
