Willi Betz drivers did the same.
Says Blackpool prom on there. if that’s where it is didn’t know you could park trucks there .unless maybe there setting up for some kind of event
That’s a name I haven’t heard in a while, are they still going?
They are long gone, the boss got shot in the shoulder many years ago, the went everywhere from North Africa, Russia, Kazakhstan, Middle East and all of Europe.
It could be a user name.
That reminds me of one morning in Haditha on the Saudi border, a quarter of a century ago. Dave Poulten and I had strung a washing line between our mirrors, offside to nearside, and the customs official came marching between the trucks and ended up festooned with socks and pants. He shouted in indignation and we were made to take the line down
That would have been funny to see.
Thanks, thought I hadn’t seen them about for a long time.
They had the contract with KBR in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Willi Betz drivers could be waiting a long time for a reload in the UK to get back to Europe, I used to see the laundry drying on the fences at motorway service stations.
They were experts in Camion Cuisine, truck cooking, very self sufficient with a kitchen inside the side lockers on the trailer, if it was raining they would lift up the side of the trailer sheet to make a shelter against the rain and eat underneath it.
Even small fridges were fitted in the lockers, how they powered them I have no idea.
Yes I remember them parked up all over the place, weren’t they banned on the service area on the southern M25 at one time, I forget the name of the place now?
Willi Betz are still very much in business, a bit smaller maybe and certainly a different company.
Could have been Clackett Lane or Cobham MSA’s?
Clacketts rings a bell, but that southern section is one I almost never used.
I think they were banned from Clackets Lane, maybe they got bored waiting for weeks for reloads and participated in one too many sherbets or homemade moonshine fermented from potato skins.
Waberer’s have contracts with some (maybe not all) MSA owners for prepaid parking. So the trucks will be going to areas where the company has a contract and not where the driver will be asked for money.
If they had a contract with one area then loads of them will be parked there, and if that contract ends then none will be seen. So, maybe not a ban as such?
The secure parking at Reau just off the A5 SE Paris always had Waberers parked there. Went there just before Xmas one year and there were dozens of trucks, although I assume most drivers were bused home.
As an aside that is a fully fenced area, for 235 trucks, ticket access, guarded and TV surveillance, showers etc for about 20-summat euro for 12hrs. And a laundromat with dryers!
Routiers Resto on site too. Used to about 13 euro for self service starters, and dessert with choice of fresh course main served to table. Extra for wine nowadays.
Good secure parking just outside Paris.
I believe Waberer used to charter flights to get drivers home for Christmas.
I’ll have an idea how much things have changed or not tomorrow night at the Relais de Beauce, a former favourite of mine, just north of Ymonville on my way to Chartres to collect a Dobermann to bring back to the Dordogne. Unusually she won’t be there long, just long enough to be sterilised and rested as she has already been adopted.
