Good Afternoon guys,
I have a query on VTG Plates in Vehicles…
Is it ‘LEGAL’ for a Unit or Rigid vehicle to carry a Photocopy of a Current VTG Plate??
Just to clear up an issue in the office

Yes, it is a legal requirement to have one attached to goods vehicles, (rigid, units and trailers) and they must be securely mounted, not just floating around the cab. The primary reason is so that the driver knows what GVW and axle weights the vehicle is allowed. Driver would be at fault if one is not there, and it would go against the company as well.

I know it is a legal requirement… I wondered whether a photocopy would be sufficient if the original had ‘gone missing’

It must be the original. The operator is given and can get replacement originals for that very purpose, as well as an office original so why have a photocopy.
Looked through the various docs and can’t find anything about using the vehicle while its waiting for a replacement certificate.
As for a photocopy - if you were a DVSA official, would you accept it, thats what I would ask them. Photocopies can be altered, so not an official document. It would make me more suspicious than missing but new one applied for. I would imagine they could do a follow-up check.
Regulation re the plates:

The good news is it has no driver enforcement as long as you mention it on a defect note. If its missing according to the DVSA enforcement sactions policy, they get a notice to sort it then can be sent to traffic commissioner if not fixed.

Not sure what the TC would think if they didn’t immediately apply for a copy as they are supposed to. At least you’re covered. Its page 305 incase you want to find it in that PDF.

Thank you very much for that reply… helps a lot to prove to other people in our Transport office.

If your referring to what I have linked in the picture.
I know tesco use photocopies. Pretty sure they keep the originals in the office.
I may be wrong as I havent worked for Tesco for about a year now though.
Shame I dont work at tesco at the moment because I could take a picture of one that clearly says copy over it.
That being said if Tesco do it then it is safe to say it is fine.
